The Tempest's second scene begins with Miranda, begging her father to spare the lives of the men at sea. Prospero originally showed Caliban some kindness, even giving him some wine (presumably this is what the ‘Water with berries in’t’ refers to).

Miranda has a close relationship with her father, although they do sometimes disagree and Miranda does disobey him at times. Prospero ( / ˈ p r ɒ s p ər oʊ/ PROS-pər-o) is a fictional character and the protagonist of William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Miranda is a compassionate, dutiful daughter, and her only harsh words in the play are directed at Caliban, who tried to rape her at one time.In an act of bravery she challenges her father's wisdom, arguing that: "Had I been any god of power, I would / Have sunk the sea within the earth or ere / It should the good ship so have swallow'd and / The fraughting souls within her. Alonso thinks he is dead because he has not seen his son since the ship sank, but Ferdinand has washed up on another part of the island.

He has learned sorcery from books, and uses it while on the island to protect Miranda and control the other characters.

Prospero is pleased that his enemies are now stranded on the island following the shipwreck, so that he can seek revenge on them. In the strategy game Into the Breach: There is a possibility to gain a red colored robotic pilot named Prospero by default. Such an analysis is borne out by the numerous indications that Caliban is innocent, childlike, and naïve – with his naivety being most clearly demonstrated by his all-too-ready attachment to Stephano as his new master.

At the beginning of the play, Prospero is vengeful and uses magic to punish his enemies harshly, including making Alonso think that his son has died. He controls Ariel, a sprite , and Caliban, a half-man, half-monster who lived on the island before Prospero and Miranda arrived.

She is, furthermore, the only female character within a cast of strong male figures, and much of her interaction on stage is dominated by the male figures around her. Read Kipling’s poem, “The White Man’s Burden”, and you will see how colonial powers regarded the peoples they subjugated. He will be accompanied by the young couple, a new generation who will bring their freshness to the stale old European system. The following activity is a great way to introduce the characters and ideas from the play for the first time. Furthermore, some critics do acknowledge that while the language in this particular speech is stronger than expected for Miranda, it is far weaker than Prospero's form of address would be given the situation.
