It doesn't content itself with being a book of short biographies, but it never quite manages to be anything else. Despite its reputation as the longest established in Europe, the history of the English monarchy is punctuated by scandal, murders, betrayals, plots, and treason. If you are a history lover like me and are curious to know how Great Britain became Great Britain, this is a great place to start! Really good primer of British royal history and arcs across the different Houses (Tudor, Stuart, Hanover, Windsor, etc.

British Kings and Queens takes an overall look at the British monarchy, explaining what a monarchy is, how it works and who gets to sit on the throne. Although Crofton does mention interesting and/or menial notes and facts; nothing is detailed and therefore the reader is not left with a solid image of any of the monarchs. It is even recorded that George II died on the toilet, a victim to constipation – well and the stodgy English diet, I assume - or presume. Other notable titles in this insightful series include Royal Babies, The Queen and Her Family and Queen Elizabeth II.
