It combines character study of damaged individuals with a mystery and was a story that I really wanted to read and know the outcome. Tremain's present-day story wittily revives Robert Louis Stevenson's fears: perhaps foreigners still have good reason to arm themselves when they venture into the wilds of the Cévenol. From the moment he arrives at the Mas Lunel, a frightening and unstoppable series of consequences is set in motion.
