Disney's 4K set doesn't quite maintain the trend of 'pleasant surprises' (the expanded ratio, the directionality and LFE) through to the extras component, neither providing anything particularly weighty nor even bothering to buck the trend and slap them on the actual 4K disc proper. And even their Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special was marginally lightweight and inconsequential, arguably at a time when we just needed something better from the flailing MCU.

Directed by James Gunn ('Super'), with a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, 'Guardians' is an absolute blast. We’ll have to see what critics and audiences say, how the film plays over time, and how this part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe plays out. It's a fabulous play, also giving background to a villainous character whose powers and strength aren't his biggest threat, as impressive as they are, but actually the threat of what he'd do to you if given half the chance. But, credit where it's due, much like the quality of this particular MCU entry is a cut above its recent peers, the quality of this physical media release is a step up too, not only delivering the excellent native 4K HDR video that's been pretty reliably afforded by them, but also (likely) capitulating to director James Gunn's desire for multiple aspect ratios - gifting the image a more "IMAX flavoured" look than any of their other recent disc releases, releases which have had IMAX enhancement on Disney+.UPDATED 12/9/2014: Our original review was conducted with a Marvel Blu-ray "check disc" that does not include any packaging.
