Yes reading tests are often tests of vocabulary or in the case of the new phonics test, how to read made up phonetic ‘words’. I have 6 years experience of working in school I have yet to find a child who is motivated by the Ginn books they are a waste of shelf space in the library. She can read ALL of the level 2 words and some more but she is having to read ALL the big books(6 I think), and all the little books (12 I think) before moving on to the next level.
