I found some mismatched information in the manual. The pen I tested had two settings: Hi and Low, but pictures of the pen in the manual showed a different model, on which the settings say ABS/FLX and PLA (those are the two different types of plastic filaments, the hi-temp ABS or Flexy plastic and the low-temp PLA plastic). This setting is important, as using the wrong temperature and plastic combination will result in less-than-optimal results. If they don't read the manual and make the connection, though, some users might miss this. I tested the Juku 3Doodler (my first time using one) and had a lot of fun with the product, even though I realized early on there was definitely a learning curve. Despite its name, the 3Doodler works best when you have a plan in mind. Drawing in 3D is a skill that will be new for most people. In my initial attempts with the 3Doodler, I defaulted to writing in 2D. But the process gets easier every time you use it. I enjoyed the range of filament colors (there's even a clear plastic one, which looks sweet) but you can't really change them out until you use the current filament up or reverse it out of the pen, which is time-consuming. I found it easier to create designs with just one or two colors. Please note some larger products are delivered to kerb-side (the street outside your home), it is at the drivers discretion if they can deliver the item to another location on the property.

It’s important to note here that you should only use 3Doodler’s own branded filaments as this is what is recommended by the manufacturer. The Create+ is much better for kids from 14 years up but we found that having to plug it into the mains power is a big issue. Its hands-free design thanks to the battery-powered system allows you to draw freely, and you are not stopped by a wire like with the Create+. While both pens can be used to draw some simple objects, the 3Doodler Start+ is much more suited to kids aged 6 to 13 years.

When the pen is heating up, the ring is red. When the pen is ready for use, the ring is either green or blue. When you heat up the 3D pen for the first tip, some light fumes may come off from its tip. If you are planning to use the 3D pens with your kids, then it’s a good idea to manage expectations. A cordless experience would have been better. Alternatively, I would’ve accepted the power port being more towards the bottom, where the plastic loading port is, and the loading port moved closer to the top; this would keep the two areas separate and get the cord out of the way a bit. If you are an adult, then 3Doodler Create+ is a better option when it comes to the pen’s design and performance but it also doesn’t allow you to create hugely sophisticated objects. One of the biggest differences between the Start and Create pen is that the Start is powered by battery. Another feature we didn’t like was the cable which was often in the way and we had to constantly move it to freely create our 3D piece. Conclusion

It doesn’t just get into the way when you are drawing but you also need to carefully consider where you are doodling. The last challenge comes in switching colors. If I removed a plastic strand and put in a new one of a different color, the two colors mixed. When I switched from ABS red to PLA white, the resulting extrusion was very light pink for almost the entire white strand. The only way I found to avoid this is to remove the loaded plastic and then continue using the pen so you can finish up the part that remains in the tip. But you’ll just end up wasting plastic if you need to move to a new color immediately. It’s worthwhile pointing out here that it’s not straightforward to draw very detailed designs with either pen. In fact, I was suprised at how hard 3D pen drawing was when we first started! My kids needed a lot of time to practice and of course were frustrated when their designs didn’t immediately turn out great. People might not want to take kissing selfies in front of it, but my Eiffel Tower is erect and should last on my countertop. I don’t see how I could’ve created something like this with my hands. You could clearly see imperfections and misalignment and someone more talented or patient would have done better. But with the dangling thread that tended to come up and the gloppiness of the clear, this is the best I could manage while still having fun.
