Many guitarists wonder whether they should choose the cheaper Fender Acoustasonic 15 or a bit more expensive Fender Acoustasonic 40. Both of these combos are great, but again – it all depends on your own personal preferences. A handsome brown and wheat-colored cabinet gives this portable amp a cool vintage vibe that promises rich, warm tones. The cabinet is made from 5-ply plywood that’s lightweight yet incredibly sturdy. It is wrapped in a brown textured vinyl covering to give it that polished retro look that will surely make heads turn.

Controls: Instrument Channel: Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, Chorus; Microphone Channel: Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble Here’s where it gets interesting. The SFX knob on the control panel works in conjunction with the side-radiating speaker to dial in how much stereo spread you want from the amp. You can leave the SFX off and have your tone poking right at your audience, or dial in a bit or spread it wider with the SFX for a more ambient in-the-room sound. Using the SFX with the Vibratone brings forth some lush wobble and rotary speaker swirl. watts just isn’t very loud for anything other than bedroom guitarists or buskers. Anything else will require additional amplification. Amps such as the Marshall AS50D have a notch filter and a frequency sweep control to really give you control over it. Others will have phase switches, on/off buttons that cut some of the low-end frequencies that can cause mischief.It’s a solid state model with 1 5 watts of power, giving it surprising punch for a small amp. The 6 inch speaker has a full range response, and includes a specially designed whizzer cone designed to improve the high frequency tones. What we really like about the Acoustasonic 15, other than everything we’ve already mentioned, is that it doesn’t over complicated things. It’s not priced excessively, and rightly so considering that what’s on offer is as straightforward and uncomplicated as it needs to be. Fender could’ve gone overboard with effects and added channels to try and appeal to everyone, but they haven’t, and its very refreshing.

The amp itself is physically one of the smallest acoustic models on the market. At just 10.5lb, it’s extremely light weight, making it incredibly portable – great news if you plan to take it with you to a performance. As to which is the best practice amp for acoustic guitarists, I would have to give the nod to Acoustasonic. I’ve always been a Fender guy in the interest of full disclosure, but I believe that even in a blind comparison, I’d have chosen so. If there’s one thing you want in an acoustic amplifier, it’s an organic reflection of the guitar’s natural tone, and with this baby Acoustasonic we found this in spades. Despite being so small, and having such a small speaker, we found that it handles the bottom end of a full size dreadnought exceptionally well– something we weren’t expecting at all.
