El Jimador’s sales rose by 18% in the first nine months to 31 January 2023. Brown-Forman also owns the Herradura Tequila brand, which grew by 11% in fiscal 2023. Looking to boost its presence off the lower tier of tequilas , venerable El Jimador, the #1 selling 100% agave tequila in Mexico, is revamping its image with a new bottle design. The new look is sleeker and considerably more upscale but what of the tequila within? Given the poor showing with the ice, I thought for sure that there would be nothing redeeming in the margarita. But I was wrong, there actually is something interesting here.

This Reposado impresses with notes of vanilla, baked apple, cinnamon, fresh agave, and oak. On The Palate Usually, a little bit of ice is a death sentence for flavors that are too light or not well saturated enough to stand up to those harsh conditions. And, sadly, that’s exactly what is going on here. Tequila production on what would become the Herradura distillery started in the early 19th century, started by a man named Feliciano Romo. In 1870, Félix López took over the property and registered it as a legal distillery named Hacienda San José del Refugio. The distillery remained in the family even after Félix’s death in 1878, operated first by his wife and later by her brother, Aurelio López. Fresh agave and citrus upfront that is soon warmed by spices and sweet vanilla and cinnamon mid-palate. A hint of hazelnuts follows while the vegetal note is well-balanced and earthy with a moreish heated finish of agave, oak and spice. Best Served

We’re surprised by how pleasing its aromas are and how complex the flavors of El Jimador Reposado are—so we’re giving it a 3-star rating. Bought 2nd June 2011 from Selfridge's, Birmingham, England, for a trip to Stonehenge; I wanted something to introduce some friends to 100% agave tequila, and it looks like I really hit paydirt. The Añejo is undisputedly a paragon of sipping tequilas, while the Blanco is a great shooter and mixer. Lastly, the Reposado represents an intelligent compromise between the two. Look out for faint spice and peppery notes in between the swirl of agave flavours. This finish is smooth, soft, and dangerously inviting. Best Served

There are some major differences between tequila and vodka, though they are both distilled spirits: Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and vodka is made from a starch or sugar rich plant. Tequila is distilled into five different types, while vodka only has one form. Tequila has varied taste and vodka doesn’t. The old distillery was shut down in the 1960’s and replaced with a newer modern facility, but the old buildings were maintained as a museum. In the 1970’s, the company introduced their first aged expressions, expanding beyond blanco tequila for the first time. What truly sets this blanco tequila apart from rival brands is its smoothness. Despite not being aged, El Jimador Blanco is as smooth and easy to drink as another distiller’s reposado variant and mixes well. On The Nose This list includes only 100%-agave tequilas. I don’t recommend any mixtos here. The difference between the two is this: a fully agave tequila is made by distilling the fermented juices of agave. That’s it. Although it is bearable, sometimes, the mouthfeel has a prominent bitter and light vegetal hint.

A very slight - but not unpleasant - bitterness/sourness comes through, less so when warmed up somewhat; this is coupled with a slightly diminished continuation of the initial taste, albeit without the fruit. There is a hint of wood in there, with some obvious cooked agave - you can taste the 'cookedness' (struggling to put this into words) of it. There's some mild spice in there too, although I don't find the cinnamon that others have. I do get the butterscotchiness though; it's a very smooth feel. El Jimador has tremendous upside for the business, given its strong heritage and popularity in the Hispanic community…” – Jerry Preyss, CEO of Scoppechio The producer uses 100% Blue Weber agave for its range of Tequilas, which includes blanco, reposado and añejo.As with all Herradura tequila, this starts as a crop of blue agave plants which are harvested and have their leaves removed. What remains is the tough and fibrous core of the plant, which is cooked in an oven to convert those fibers into sugar. The plants are then crushed to release the fluid, and that fluid is fermented to convert the sugar into alcohol. At this point, it is distilled three times to create the new blanco tequila. Sweet, very fruity - there's almost a hint of either strawberry or cherry in there somewhere. There's this kind of buttery smoothness over everything that continues throughout the whole experience. VERY pleasant. El Jimador tequila has some medicinal and alcoholic hints upfront but is mellowed by sweet vanilla. Adding ice might help smoothen a few rough notes for our second drink. Like other El Jimador tequilas, Blanco uses only pure Weber blue agave. These notes are present throughout the spirit and are joined on the nose with fresh citrus, vegetal, and light wood aromas. On The Palate The liquid is nice and crystal clear, like the water from a fresh mountain spring. As for the aroma coming off the glass, it’s spot on for a typical tequila — herbal notes close to fresh cut grass with a bit of lemon citrus to brighten the whole thing up. We love El Jimador Reposado Tequila because of its agave, vanilla, woodsy and fruity notes. Made in Herradura, it is careful distilled and adored for its price and taste. It has a warm, relatively smooth long finish with alcohol astringency. It has lingering oak, vanilla, peppery spice, and a bit of cinnamon flavor at the tail end. Our Thoughts First Sip El Jimador Reposado is the company’s take on this classic, best-of-both-worlds tequila style, aged in American oak barrels for two months. It impresses with a smooth golden colour and an even smoother taste.This citrussy clearness continues on the palette, where this silver tequila is sweet and pine fresh with a peppery aftertaste with hints of grilled vegetal and intense blue agave notes. Pretty boring bottle. Nothing of note here, although the fact that it's a tall bottle means it's easier to find in our crowded liquor cabinet :P I particularly like the branding here. the label is as small and unobtrusive as possible, wrapping around near the base and leaving the majority of the surface area completely clear and transparent. This might not be quite as important with a blanco tequila as it would with an aged version, but it does help to consumers see the quality and the clarity of the product inside the bottle. era El Jimador is a Lowlands spirit, unaged and named in honor of the jimador, a Mexican agave harvester. Theres modest pepper on the nose, with red chiles, lemon, coconut, and roasted meats. The body is a little all over the place, with notes of chile oil, grilled pineapple, more lemon, and a sultry agave/herbal character on the finish. Theres quite a bit of that funky meat character on the finish, but its not overwhelming or pungent. A shaker filled with ice and El Jimador Reposado is the best way to enjoy a pure taste of El Jimador. Drink slowly from a shot glass after straining. Aromatic notes of citrus and cinnamon, as well as a bold, ripe agave character. It may be that some swear by serving a citrus garnish, but do as you please.
