Moving Storyline: The film tells the story of a naive young woman named Gelsomina, who is sold by her mother to a brutish circus performer named Zampanò. As they travel together, Gelsomina and Zampanò form a complex relationship that is both tender and tragic.

In 1965, Quinn divorced Katherine and married Iolanda Addolari, the Italian costume designer he had met on the set of Barabbas, four years previously. It was a marriage that lasted 30 years, and produced three sons. The battalion commander, Basque Lt. Col. Pierre-Noël Raspéguy ( Anthony Quinn), has called central headquarters for reinforcements. Headquarters sends only a single plane load of French paratroopers, under the command of Major de Clairefons. Despite Raspéguy's attempts to provide covering fire, the paratroopers are slaughtered as they land. Major de Clairefons is killed when his parachute drags him into a minefield. Raspéguy is enraged that General Melies ( Jean Servais) sent only one plane, and further believes that Melies intends to make him responsible for the entire debacle at Dien Bien Phu. Quinn’s powerful portrayal makes the audience sympathize with Barabbas and understand his internal conflict.The film opens actually in French Indochina at the Battle of Dienbienphu where the French got themselves surrounded and the guerrillas they had been fighting for years came out in the open. Among others surrendering was Anthony Quinn's regiment of paratroopers which included the unit historian Alain Delon and George Segal an Algerian Moslem serving in the French army.
