Pruning: Prune your Photinia Red Robin as needed to maintain its desired shape and size. Regular pruning can also encourage the growth of new red foliage. Pruning is typically done in late spring or early summer after the flowering period. Foliage: The most distinctive feature of Photinia Red Robin is its striking new foliage, which emerges as bright red or bronze-red leaves before maturing to glossy green. This vibrant coloration is especially pronounced in spring but can appear periodically throughout the year. If you want unusual foliage, the 'Red Robin' is the perfect choice. The elliptic leaves are finely serrated at their margins and fresh foliage shoots through as a brilliant red colour. The leaves mature to a dark green, but as new foliage continues to emerge red you get a real contrast of colours over the spring period. Mid-spring also sees the arrival of clusters of pretty white flowers, which add further interest. Come autumn, the leaves mature to a bronzed green, which adds great interest over the winter months. Larger plants won’t need to be planted as close, but how close will depend on how soon you want your hedge to look full. Preparation before planting

The plants should be planted deep enough to cover the roots. They do not like to be planted too deep as this may kill them or stunt their growth. Photinia fraseri 'Red Robin' offers year round interest with its vivid red leaves. In spring it has further interest with clusters of white flowers. A fantastic screening tree, hedge or ornamental specimen. The considerations that guide pot sizes are water, nutrition, drainage, wind and mobility with a general rule of thumb of bigger is better. Ask two different experts on pot sizes and get four different opinions. The size that is best for you depends on what you want to achieve. The best we can offer is a mature Red Robin at around 4m tall will likely need around 150 litres which is more than one person can lift on their own. If you live in a windy area, you will need a larger container or need to use alternative measures to keep it from blowing over such as weighting the pot, tying the pot or tree down, using sheltered areas or even partially burying it. You either want the branches to knit together or you don't e.g. hedging/screening v's specimen/ornamental trees. It is not a good idea to have branch tips being moved in strong winds and causing damage to other young growth nearby. So if planting them as ornamental stand-alone trees, plant 5m or more apart or prune to keep them separate. Another reason for your leaves not looking healthy is hunger and your hedge may need a granule or liquid feed with high nitrogen or some poultry manure pellets.Mature Height and Width: Consider the mature height and width of the Photinia Red Robin variety you are planting. Some varieties can grow taller and wider than others. Be sure to choose a spacing that allows the plants to reach their mature size without crowding or excessive pruning. We don’t sell Red Robin bare rooted at the moment as we feel they are better coming from a pot or root wrapped as there more likely to grow into a stronger plant and less chance of the plant dying. Planting tips Distance apart: Red Robin doesn’t like to be lying in water so if the area you want to plant them in is wet, you may need to consider draining the ground or making a mound/ditch of top soil on top of the ground and plant them into this. Before planting, it's a good idea to lay out the hedge with stakes and string to visualize the spacing and alignment. This can help you achieve the desired look for your Photinia Red Robin hedge. Additionally, consider the growth rate of the plants and how long it will take for them to reach your desired hedge height and density. This is a hardy, beautiful full standard (clear stemmed) tree with the evergreen foliage of the Photinia.Red Robin has bright red leaves in early Spring. Further red growth is encouraged by gentle trimming. It grows at up to 30cm per year, and can reach a height and spread of 5m in its lifetime.
