Based on my tests above, I would never recommend using wood filler as a long-term sustainable medium to hold a screw in place.

When it comes to screwable wood fillers, the key is to choose a type that offers enough durability and strength to hold a screw, especially if it’s not going to bear any significant weight or stress.

In my woodworking journey, I’ve found that the type of wood filler you choose will depend on the nature of your project. Among different types of wood fillers, Epoxy wood fillers outstand from others in terms of their screw-holding ability. Screw holes fix by wood filler Can You Drill into Wood Filler? When the wood filler is completely dried and cured you can drill a screw or nail into the preferred area without any issue because of the great flexibility of wood filler. Give the filler a few hours to dry before sanding it down with some fine-grit sandpaper until there are no bumps or ridges left, then clean off any extra residue with a damp cloth. If necessary, you can apply another coat of silicone after this to make sure the hole is completely filled. When wood filler is necessary, ensure you’re using a high-quality, durable product, drill pilot holes to reduce stress on the filler, and understand that it’s more of a temporary solution rather than a permanent fix.

You see, as the epoxy sets, air bubbles can get trapped inside the resin. Once air bubble filled epoxy has set – if you then tried to turn screws into it, those screws won’t hold on very well. Using a small piece of pine and a sharp knife you can create a pointed shim to fill the oversized screw hole. Sharpen the pine wood into a pointed splint and tap into the hole. For a stronger hold coat the pine splint with wood glue before tapping into the hole. Once the glue has dried, use a chisel or sharp knife to cut off any overhanging pine flush with the edge of the wood before drilling a small pilot hole ready to screw into. I would definitely not recommend using wood filler for this application. Wood filler does not have enough structural strength or trusted strength to support a whole wooden door. You can screw into wood filler, but it’s not always recommended because wood filler isn’t as strong as solid wood. If you have to, use a two-part epoxy filler, drill a pilot hole, and avoid over-tightening the screw. Also, ensure the filler has fully cured before you screw into it.That means only a little amount of hardener is enough to mix with a large amount of wood filler that was taken to the mixing bowl. In case the hole needs to be expanded a bit to accommodate the larger screw or anchor, it can be widened slightly using an appropriately sized drill bit.
