If you only have small amounts of general waste you can downsize your green bin at any time to a 120 litre bin.

Please note that the collection service is 'opt in' so you do not need to cancel it if you do not wish to pay for it. Do not put out additional waste or recycling next to your bin as this is not permitted and will not be uplifted. In Durham Region, the introduction of the Green Bin in July 2006, coupled with an increase in pickup frequency for other recyclables, has led to a 39% decrease on tonnage sent to landfill compared to July 2005. Reusing materials helps to make sure that we are making the most of our waste and saves valuable natural resources. These green garden bins are easy to clean, are quiet when in use, and larger green waste bins come with a chipnest to accommodate data carriers.This contract sets out the basis on which we will provide the Garden Waste Collection Service to residents. Your green bin is only for materials that cannot be recycled through the kerbside recycling service ( burgundy bin, blue bin, brown bin, food waste caddy, black box or textile bag) or at a recycling centre.

While it is true that home composting can also serve this purpose, the green bin programs are viewed as being more convenient and more inclusive of source materials. Please don't include any personal or financial information, for example your National Insurance or credit card numbers. Consequently, we will tell you on the form whether any selected bin is appropriate at your property, though you can find out more about bin eligibility on this page, prior to making a request. We include a cut-out-and-keep guide to what goes in which bin in most editions of Cambridge Matters, the magazine we deliver to all residents every three months. If the bin that has been provided to you is lost, stolen or damaged you may be charged the cost of replacement.Once you have dealt with the issue, please re-present the green bin on the next scheduled collection date. Green bins are collected fortnightly from March to November, and every four weeks from December to February. on your designated collection day and no earlier than the night before and should be removed as soon as possible after collection. Please do not present bagged waste next to your green bin, the collection teams will not collect it.

Occasional extra recycling can be placed in a transparent sack and put next to the bin on collection day. From August 2023, all non-recyclable general waste from your green bin and from the bulky and black bag skips at recycling centres will be sent to an Energy from Waste Facility. For a yearly subscription fee, residents will receive a wheeled bin (or sacks for qualifying properties) for their garden waste that will be collected every fortnight.Somerset Council’s decision on whether a bin or bag will be emptied where in its reasonable opinion you have not complied with points 7 and/or 8 above will be final, and an alternate collection will not be arranged nor compensation provided. In the interest of health and safety, please ensure that your bins are presented at the kerbside for collection without anything attached, including rope or bungee cords, as this can become entangled with our lifting equipment and is a danger to operatives.
