The OneStep+ owes something to the discontinued Impossible I-1, an ambitious offering that was hampered by noisy operation and a battery that had a hard time holding a charge. The OneStep+ has most of the functionality of the I-1, including Bluetooth remote control and a lens that can focus close, but keeps things quieter by using a mechanical lever to adjust focus, and can maintain a charge when stored for a period of months, rather than days with the I-1. The buttons function as you would expect them to, and the printing slot worked perfectly. When you take a photo, it prints with an automatic screen that unrolls on top of your picture. This protects your photo from harsh light that may affect how it develops, and is super handy when you're taking pics outdoors. The new tripod mount is compatible with classic, screw-on tripods of any height, so you can use it with any you may already have. Polaroid doesn't offer tripods at this time. There are a number of special shooting modes available in the app. There's a simple one-button remote control—for those times when you want to be in the photo—and a self-timer so you can hide your phone away when posing for a group shot.

With the Light Painting mode, Polaroid Originals offers probably one of the most exciting features in the app. It uses the LED light of the smartphone to “paint” in the air. During this time the lens is open. The camera then shoots a photo – the drawn light beams and the photo motif merge. Unique photos are guaranteed. Manual-Mode My only gripe with the overall design is with the size and shape. Don't get me wrong – I do like the look of it. It's classic and sleek, but I happen to have pretty small hands. With the size, shape, and location of the buttons, I found it a little difficult to hold the camera and easily maneuver it between my fingers. I will say that this problem is largely solved by placing the camera on a tripod via the tripod mount – an extremely handy addition, but not always practical if you want to literally be able to point and shoot. The remote modes on the app also help avoid the issue of fumbling with the capture button's awkward placement, but again, that does take away from the novelty of the camera itself. The accessories The OneStep+ is every bit the homage to Polaroid’s ’70s-era original, with chunky styling that’s full of retro charm. What is the difference between the OneStep 2 and the OneStep Plus?

With the double exposure mode, small creative masterpieces are created. Two images are merged into one, or more precisely, a photo is exposed twice. This way you create exciting effects that make the photo unique. But the flexibility to lean in and snap tighter shots is a boon. The OneStep 2 supports focus to about two feet, but you can get closer with the OneStep+. You won't have to stretch your arms as far for selfies, and you can get in a little closer when making portraits. Of course the Plus also has a classic self-timer. As far as shooting ‘modes’ go, there’s just a slider to make your photos either darker or lighter. Until, that is, you pair the camera to your smartphone over Bluetooth. Polaroid’s Originals app adds a remote trigger, timer shooting, light painting and double exposure modes, as well as manual shooting. The app also supports double exposures, and long exposures with a narrow f-stop for light painting. There's a Noise Trigger function, which is like a virtual Clapper for your camera—just make a loud noise to trigger the shutter. Finally, there's a full manual exposure mode, with control over shutter speed, aperture, and flash power.

The Polaroid Now+ certainly isn't one of a kind. While Polaroid is the OG brand in instant photography, several others have produced instant print cameras over the years, at various price points and with unique features. But while there are others out there, the Now+ is one of the most versatile – it lets both beginners and seasoned photographers explore their creative sides with its easy-to-use modes, which fosters experimentation. No other brand seems to have as many modes to play with. As I mentioned though, this creativity does come at a pretty high cost, what with the camera itself and the necessary film. But if you're willing to pay the price, the Now+ really lets you push the boundaries of analog photography. No desire for the stress caused by the classic self-timer? With the remote trigger you decide yourself when the camera should release without being behind it. Whoever has ever tried to direct a larger group of people will appreciate this function. Self-Timer The shutter release sits under the flash. It's a big red button, hard to miss, and is comfortably triggered with your index finger. There's a button on the rear, in line with the shutter, that suppresses the flash when held down. The micro USB charging port and bright red On/Off switch are above it. Both cameras share these features: the point-and-shoot simplicity, a standard lens (0.6m-infinity), self-timer, a flash you can turn on and off, along with a rechargeable battery. They also take i-Type film, which is a new instant film that’s battery free, so it’s a little friendlier on the wallet. Both cameras have that retro look from the ‘70s and make it simple to take great Polaroid photos. Deciding between both cameras comes down to the sort of photographs you enjoy taking.The least expensive path to Leica ownership, the Leica Sofort is a simple-to-use point-and-shoot instant camera with a classic look and that all-important red dot on the front to let everyone know you own one of the camera world’s most respected brands. Mini paper format prints are on the small side, though.
