There was a high emphasis on vehicular combat, and that came at a cost of the fun and simplicity that made the series so great. Instead, the Codemasters developers could conjure up tracks on snooker tables, breakfast tables, garden shrubbery, toilet seats and many other locations. The first game, released in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, birthed a series that quickly became known for its wacky courses. This was one of my all time favourite games as a younger gamer, hours spent with friends racing each others VW Bug Caravan around a pool table, to jump onto the kitchen table. Designed around fun gameplay at every turn, Micro Machines World Series is the ultimate pick up and play experience for players of all ages and abilities, offering intuitive, easy to learn controls that make the controller impossible to put down.

There are some positives in that during a close race when no one is pulling away, the screen zooms in so that you only need to be leading a small amount to get the win; stops things dragging on, which is a good thing for this game.While Turbos was a charming nostalgia trip, World Series often feels calculated and almost soulless. The emphasis wasn’t on local multiplayer so much anymore, friends would instead meet in online lobbies. Hero shooters work thanks to their objective-based gameplay and having teams work out which classes work best together to overcome the opposing team. If one day thousands of unsold copies of Micro Machines World Series were found in a ditch alongside the remaining copies of ET: The Videogame, I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised.

COOL INTERACTIVE PLAY-SETS: Teleporters, catapults, giant fans, etc add even more fun and will ensure no two races are the same! We would always play the Tournament mode, which allowed us to play through the tracks and the winner at the end would always have the bragging rights. With so many new attacks to learn and so many ways to die, things get hectic fast and you'll find yourself waiting to respawn on a regular basis. Sure, these track locations were as wacky as the previous titles – one in particular had you on a Hungry Hippos board at one point – but the tracks themselves had a tendency to be oval shaped. Absolutely love Micro Machines, I used to collect the toys as a kid in the early 90's and I still remember playing Tournament mode on Micro Machines 96 Turbo Track Editor Edition on Sega Mega Drive with like 8 friends!

The only memory 90's gaming memory this brought back was the disappointment of playing with a Barcode Battler for the first time. That said, some complain about the controls, saying the cars are too sensitive and the controls are basic. Being based on the children’s line of miniature vehicles, Micro Machines didn’t need to rely on traditional racing courses. Familiar weapons from Toybox, the Tommy Gun, the Hammer and the Mines are rebranded as Nerf products, while countless Nerf guns litter the tracks and arenas.
