Plastic Woodwind Instruments have become widely used in Education, not least because they are cheaper than the real thing but because they are small and light and have a remarkable sound making them very acceptable teaching instruments – not to mention almost indestructible!

The Lyons C clarinet and latterly the Clarineo is used by thousands of students throughout the world. Recently joined by the Nuvo flute and jSax, plastic woodwind instruments are opening up avenues that otherwise wouldn’t have existed.

This uke is probably not for the guy who already plays something nicer, but then again, the guy who already plays something nicer probably already knows that. Nor, by the same token, would this uke be a good way to convince someone who plays another instrument of the ukulele’s many merits. Mahalo’s two most popular ukuleles are their pink ukuleles (insanely popular with girls) and the Flying V ukulele (which I would strongly warn you against buying – it’s the worst ukulele I’ve ever played). He was the 4th or 5th ukulele that I bought, is now part of a good medium sized collection, is one of hundreds of ukuleles I have played, but he still remains my favourite. Every favourite instrument should have a name and this one is known as “Escape Plan B”*. So - some nice looks, but sadly let down with the finish and a fundamental error in the build. How does that translate into playing it? Shortly after my first TV exposure to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, I could no longer resist the stirrings which this had engendered. I went online, googled ‘ukulele’, and was hooked from that moment on. There was absolutely no doubt whatsoever: I just had to have One of Those.I think the problem with any of these lower-end ukes (and indeed most intruments) isn't necessarily that they're all terrible, but that the Friday-afternoon/Monday-morning jobs really are stinkers (they exist among more expensive models as well, of course), so I'd never buy one online unless I was braced for disappointment and the prospect of some woodwork. This may not sound like a fantastic Uke ‘looks bad’ sounds bad and is generally very unreliable but it had one tremendously redeeming quality, one that I did not expect at all. A social one. find the ukulele losing its tuning regularly. So try to buy a Mahalo with geared tuners if you can! Plastic ‘Brass’ Instruments

pBrass Instruments or Plastic ‘brass’ Instruments are a fantastic invention, resulting in many brass players accessing instruments they wouldn’t normally have had the chance to. They are great for children or for a beginner which is looking for a budget buy in the brass family and great for the school or education authority who want something that will last but at low cost. My storytime kids don’t tend to notice (or care about) the tone problems or the buzzing during “If You’re Happy and You Know It”. Maybe quality control has improved, maybe these came from a particular factory (I don't know if this applies to Mahalo, but with other instruments that are ostensibly identical models, there are distinct differences between some that are contracted out to different factories), or maybe the shop I used (where the staff seem to know a fair bit about ukes) weeds the bad 'uns out, though while chatting, the guy who served me claimed they'd had no problems, and they sell a lot locally. All new Clarinets and Saxophones would come with their own mouthpiece but as a player progress on their instruments it is often a normal progression for them to try and obtain a mouthpiece to suit their own style of playing and to improve and facilitate the sound of that instrument.
When you’re sitting down it’s hard to avoid getting spiked in the groin. Which isn’t an experience I enjoy (and anyone who tells you I do enjoy it and that I regularly pay for exactly that experience is lying). Euphoniums

I wasn’t going to write a review of the Mahalo Flying V. My brother got me one for Christmas. It was a nice thought and he wasn’t to know it’s the WORST UKULELE IN THE WORLD. The Good Stuff I've never tried the UG50 you have - yes, I took at the round-up you did. (If Mahalo's numbering system were logical, you'd think the UG50 you found so many bad problems with would be a step up from the UG30, but I guess not! Or maybe times have changed chez Mahalo since you bought it?) I caught the ukulele itch when, in December of last year, I thought it would add an interesting twist to my job as a youth services librarian. I have since bought two other ukuleles and am aching for another. My enthusiasm has also inspired my mother to revisit her ukulele playing days but she’s in need of a little guidance and, of course, I’m willing to help her out. The strings are brand new when you first buy them so of course they’ll take a while to stretch! I tweak my ukulele before gigs every Saturday, but every since July-ish, he’s never been out of tune.
