The Shardor Coffee and Spice Grinder was expertly designed to be the perfect multitasking tool. It comes with two stainless steel bowls. The first is a two-blade grinder bowl that handles dry items, like spices and coffee beans. The other is a four-blade chopper bowl that can wet-grind garlic and herbs, like basil, eliminating the need for manual mincing as you cook. If you don’t need the power of an electric grinder, but you still want an easy and effective way to add freshly ground spices to your dishes, the Kuhn Rikon Ratchet Grinder is one of the most user-friendly manual spice grinders on the market. This Swiss-designed model has a door on the front of its body that you can open and use to easily fill the spice chamber with one dried spice or a combination to create your own spice blend.

Using Microplane’s pioneering technology, the Spice Mill features the iconic, signature razor-sharp stainless-steel blades ensuring ingredients are effortlessly and precisely cut without ripping or tearing. While there are no bells and whistles here—the grinder has one stainless steel bowl and a push-top on and off control—we think its simplicity is one of the things that adds to its appeal. Our tester noted that like similar models with a two-blade design, lightweight herbs tended to fly away from the blade area, resulting in an uneven grind. However, on heavier spices, like cloves and peppercorns, this machine worked really well. Just be sure to follow the suggested grinding times noted in the manual for optimum results. Standard Returns Policy

The key is the super sharp, stainless steel Microplane rasp on the bottom of the mill. The blade has 128 razor sharp, stainless steel teeth to help pulverize the hardest spices. The choice is mainly between a clear glass spice mill or a traditional wood finish. Grinding mechanisms use either super sharp stainless steel blades or ceramic cutting discs. As with any intricate and sharp grinder, we did find cleaning the base a fraction fiddly. However, the results were impressively even. We also liked that the product has a built-in storage area, giving you somewhere to keep ground spices until you need them. Measuring in at just over 11cm tall, it’s also incredibly unobtrusive, and can be easily stowed away in a kitchen drawer or cupboard until needed again.

Pestle and mortar: Made up of a heavy bowl (mortar) and a club-shaped tool (pestle), this is a primitive and centuries-old means of grinding spices and other foods. These come in a range of sizes, from small ones no bigger than a teacup to large Mexican molcajete. Pestle and mortars are versatile as both dry and wet mixes can be ground in them. It blitzed our coffee beans well and made short work of spices for a fruit crumble, too. It’s worth knowing that Salter recommends using it for dry ingredients only.
