While Porto produced in Portugal is strictly regulated by the Instituto do Vinho do Porto, many wines in the U. One of our responsibilities is to ensure we do not sell age-restricted products online to people who are under the minimum legal age.

The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. These are among the most demanding and challenging styles of Port to produce, requiring great skill and years of experience from the winemaker. Because it has already been exposed to oxygen, an open bottle of tawny resists oxidation the longest of all ports. We believe that all the wines in our range are excellent examples of their style, and offer exceptional value for money.The estate is composed of Quinta dos Malvedos (89ha), Quinta das Lages (71ha), Quinta do Vale de Malhadas (32ha), Quinta da Vila Velha (56ha) and Quinta do Tua (28ha). Vintage ports are aged in barrels for a maximum of 2 years before bottling, and often require another 5 to 15 years of aging in the bottle before reaching what is considered proper drinking age. Not every year is declared a vintage in the Douro, only those when conditions are favourable to particularly flavourful crops of grapes. This is time-consuming and requires a significant amount of manual labour, ensuring the wine retains its unique flavours and aromas. They are vintage in the sense that they come from the produce of a specific year, but in most other respects are the opposite.

Graham’s Aged Tawny Ports are made from wines of the very highest quality which, following careful selection are blended and subsequently matured in seasoned casks for a number of years until their peak of maturity is attained. Today, Graham's is one of the most respected port wine producers in the world, known for exceptional quality and unique taste. During the 17th century, a couple of wine merchants noticed that the people in the Lamego monastery in the Douro Valley added grape spirit in the initial stages of fermentation to make the wines sweet and authentic.
