It is interesting to hear Major Winters talk about some of the key contacts, such as the assault and routing he led in Holland. I can't recommend this book or any of the materials related to the Band of Brothers and Easy Company enough, it's simply a story of some incredible men that needs to be told.

This is a moving memoir by the man who earned the love and respect of Easy Company and who is a hero to new generations worldwide. Winters was the subject of the 2005 book Biggest Brother: The Life of Major Dick Winters, The Man Who Led the Band of Brothers, written by Larry Alexander. This assumption lies at the heart of the combat exclusion, a policy that was fiercely defended as essential to national security, despite evidence that women have been contributing to hostile operations now and throughout history. In hindsight, one “red flag” this author observed was the company’s very lenient payment policy on at least one tour: 10% 90 days prior to departure; 50% 60 days prior; and 40% 30 days prior.Now, here was a soldier—hit by enemy fire in Normandy on D-Day, behind the German lines, and he is more upset that he had let his buddies down than he was concerned with his own injury. As the tour approaches / gets underway, payments are made to the service providers—hotels, bus companies, restaurants, tour guides, etc. He explained to McAuliffe that he had seen enough of war and apparently McAuliffe understood his position, but explained that he was needed because of his command experience. What is very clear once you finish reading this book though, is what a truly amazing man Richard Winters was, and given an insight on how a slightly shy and unassuming ordinary guy could take on the mantle he did with such dignity and authority, in turn earning the respect of every soldier that came into contact with him.
