There were so many weird instances, I’m not gonna even try to discuss them all here. Although, again, there were meaningful ideas buried under all the unnecessary, weird stuff. This memoir is a wonderful reminder for me that these tragic and painful experiences do exist in the larger poly community. And if someone can read about it and have it be a game changer in their life then it's done it's job. Though he not ever played under or was ever coached by Imran Khan, he was all praise for the man. But the thing is – though we were told he was ignorant, we never actually got to see it properly. I wish Shusterman showed us at least one example of what exactly Ash was ignorant about and how he should have done it differently in his original world, apart from being more aware. There was not one specific thing that he could have done better in his original universe, that he got to learn about while traveling through all these other AUs. I didn’t think that part was covered well at all. The book begins with a hospital report detailing the injury and comatose status of Edward "Teddy" Youngblood, age 13. From there we start to hear Teddy's inner thoughts, in a sort jumbled nonsensical format. Through his family members' dialogue, we learn that Teddy sustained a traumatic brain injury and collapsed on the football field after the "Rookie Rumble" scrimmage. At first, no one really knows what caused him to collapse. However, throughout the book, we slowly learn his injury is more than just a "typical" football injury. The truth unravels in a multimedia format, through text messages, online forum posts, transcripts from school therapists and dialogue of who talks to Teddy in the hospital. This book unravels some of the deep truths of the rising news stories on head injuries in young football players, as well as hazing rituals in team sports. Harold Hamm’s contribution to society is arguably one of the most significant of our lifetimes. One would be hard pressed to find someone who has had a greater impact on mankind’s quality of life anywhere else in the world. Through tenacity, perseverance, passion, hard work, and raw talent, Harold envisioned and commercialized horizontal drilling in previously inaccessible tight oil reservoirs. Experts educated in petroleum engineering and energy executives like me were taught that what he was trying to accomplish was impossible. Fortunately, Harold didn’t read those books. Der Schluss ... ich weiß nicht so wirklich, was er mir sagen soll. Irgendwas dringt da schon zu mir durch, aber ich kann es nicht greifen. Wie vieles, was hier passiert, das find ich wirklich etwas schade.

Neal Shusterman takes on many important topics, and through Ash, he covers these as he moves into each alternate universe. He faces a world where segregation is normal. A world where his sexual orientation changes, and even a world where he wakes up one day as a woman. Alongside these changes, there are other changes as well, like drug dealing, trying to help a person that might be in an abusive relationship, even eliminating people along the way with no consequences. None of the characters were particularly interesting. The main character thought he could fix every problem the other characters had, and he became so philosophical during the story, 17 year-olds don't think that way. The other characters were straigth-up tropes. As a screen and TV writer, Neal has written for the "Goosebumps" and “Animorphs” TV series, and wrote the Disney Channel Original Movie “Pixel Perfect”. Currently Neal is adapting his novel Everlost as a feature film for Universal Studios. Initial Thoughts

Woah. I absolutely need this book for my classroom. And engaging story with an interesting narrative style. A book for everyone but specifically reluctant and struggling readers that'll make those students say "I can read this!!" And "Look at all that white space!" It's VERY easy to read but feels like a book for teens which is SUCH an important trait. The teen issues are talked about with sophistication and complexity, but the actual reading isn't difficult. Oh! Also good for older ELLs!! Of Scorpion Shards, Publisher's Weekly wrote: "Shusterman takes an outlandish comic-book concept, and, through the sheer audacity and breadth of his imagination makes it stunningly believable. A spellbinder." The book ends with Obama being elected President of the United States and reporting on how he offered Clinton the job of United States Secretary of State in his administration. After initially turning Obama down in part out of fear that Bill Clinton would become a distraction for them both, she accepts the job after a late night phone conversation with Obama, who convinces her that she would be the best person for the position. A day doesn’t go by without energy in the headlines. From banning gas stoves to prices at the pump to threats to the world’s energy supplies, energy is front and center. Though it's very well-written and Franklin Veaux is a fantastic and quirky individual, I didn't gain much of anything from reading this book. I felt it was a bit of a let down. The game changing relationship only featured for a moment and it didn't strike me as particularly life-changing. Perhaps this is because I'm one of those natural game changers so it's harder for me to understand how others take years to figure these lessons out.
