Scottish Highlands & England It’s a short trek of 2-3 kms. Depending on your speed, it can take anything between 1.5-2.5 hrs. Difficulty level of this trek? A cold morning as it takes until around 8 am for the sun to clear the steep hillsides to the east. There are two more ‘passes’ to cross today, but there is little in the way of climbing. Ghunsa is also the best place to taste tungba, the traditional Tibetan wine made from millet. March is my own favourite moth for trekking, mornings tend to have blue skies and are often quite warm, cloud tends to build around the peaks about mid-day and drops into the valleys as the afternoon goes on with a chance of rain (snow at altitude) in the late afternoon / evening – Not as many trekkers about, so usually no problems finding a bed for the night and no huge queues for meals. Britain has a long, healthier-than-ever tradition of hill walking and rambling. It was once a political struggle. In 1932, around 400 walkers scuffled with gamekeepers to mass trespass, a form of civil disobedience, on the summit of Kinder Scout in the Peak District, in protest against limited access to the countryside. ‘Right to roam’ legislation followed, opening up the countryside for us all to walk in, when previously much of it had been privately owned.
