Characterization: Josh was my favorite of the character just because he was given the most room to grow and he did. While Clara was as innocent as she can be, she goes out of her comfort zone, at her own pace, and Josh, as flirty as he can be, emphasizes the importance of consent and mutual pleasure.

Josh might be a bit too perceptive—not to mention handsome—for comfort, but there’s a good chance he and Clara could have survived sharing a summer sublet if she hadn’t looked him up on the Internet. The moment I learned about Josh being a sex worker, I buckled up in my seat because I knew I was going to be on a wild ride and while it was one, there were also other aspects of the story that were really heartwarming and touching. Clara’s journey to growing up from her family’s expectations was beautiful and progressed at a believable rate. The chemistry between them was so electrifying and sizzling hot, that sometimes I feel like I’m literally present in the room with them. Danan’s voice is fresh and sharp, and the romance between Clara and Josh is both sizzling hot and heartwarming.

That can be a good or bad thing, and in this case it was mostly good, though I can’t help but wonder if my high expectations are what is having me round down instead of up, you know? Danan gives us strangers to annoyed-roommates to kinda-friends to angsty-pining to finally-lovers with humor, wit, and just a hint of pathos.

The Roommate is both hilarious and earnest, with off-the-charts tension and a sparkling, vibrant voice. Just because Clara had a doctorate and Josh didn’t that didn’t put them on different grounds like so many other novels make happen. The ending just rubbed me the wrong way because we had been dragged along with Clara’s familial baggage and her unease with Josh and her family. Danan gives us strangers to annoyed-roommates to kinda-friends to angsty-pining to finally-lovers with humour, wit, and just a hint of pathos.I know that pornography is not a comfortable topic for everyone but this book really highlights the reality of inequalities and exploitation that’s happening in the industry. What they decide to do about it will change both of their lives, and if they’re lucky, they’ll help everyone else get lucky too. He was sweet, caring, super empowering and supportive, hilarious, adorable…you just wanted to hug him and let him do wicked things to you at the same time. I wanted to watch Clara actually stand up for her new life and Josh in front of the people she was so scared of.Josh and Clara are easily my favorite ‘smash the patriarchy’ couple, and The Roommate is easily one of my top romance reads of 2020! While I wish the ending had been longer to face some of Clara’s problems, I am pleased enough with the novel to give it a 5/5 rating. I loved how we learned about her and she wasn’t jaded about Clara and Josh even if Josh and her had been together for so long.
