Description

This medicinal product contains 127.88 mg sodium per 1 sachet (10ml) dose, equivalent to 6.4% of the WHO recommended maximum daily intake for sodium. The medicinal product is a combination of two antacids (calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate. Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication. A medical review of the patient's condition should be undertaken seven days after initiating treatment or before if symptoms worsen. For breast-fed babies, mix the right amount of powder with 5 mL of cooled boiled water to make a smooth paste, then mix in another 10 mL of water. Give this to your baby after the feed, using a syringe or spoon.

Drug Interactions

As with other antacid products, taking this product can mask the symptoms of other more serious, underlying medical conditions. If symptoms persist, or treatment is required for more than 7 days continuously, medical advice should be sought. As a second line of protection, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate act as antacids, countering the problematic acid in the process. The protective barrier lasts for up to 4 hours.

If you often have heartburn or indigestion, take Gaviscon regularly after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day, whether or not you have symptoms.

Some medicines must not be taken at the same time as Gaviscon. This is because the medicines can affect how the other medicine works.

Renal Insufficiency: Not to be used when treating infants with known or suspected impairment of renal function (see section 4.3). For breast fed infants give Gaviscon Infant part way through each feed or meal using a spoon or feeding bottle.Hypernatraemia should be treated with oral fluids and monitoring of the infant's electrolytes. Severe cases should be treated by the cautious use of hypo-osmotic solutions.

This product is considered high in sodium. This should be particularly taken into account for those on a low salt diet (e.g. in some cases of congestive heart failure and renal impairment). You'll usually take Gaviscon tablets and liquid up to 4 times a day. It's best to take it after meals and at bedtime. This is usually when the pain and discomfort is at its worst. But if your doctor has prescribed Gaviscon, take it when they tell you to. For bottle-fed babies you can add the right amount of powder into the formula feed in the bottle. Shake the bottle well before feeding your baby.

Follow dosage instructions exactly to avoid an excessive amount of product per feed and the possible risk of hypernatraemia. You can give your child medicines that contain paracetamol or ibuprofen, unless your doctor has told you not to. Treatment of children younger than 12 years of age is not generally recommended, except on medical advice. For babies weighing more than 4.5 kg (10 lb), mix the right amount of powder into at least 225 mL of formula feed.
