I think what I like most is how much I learn from her, especially about profiling, even though these earlier books were written in the mid to later 1990s. Forensic psychology is a fascinating topic, and it is clear the author has deep knowledge of the subject. It is almost incomprehensible to me that she has no practical (that I am aware of) experience in the field, yet writes about it as if she were a world expert. D.I. Paula MacIntyre ,Stacey Chen, Karim Hussain and new recruit, Steve Nisbet have their work cut out to find where these bodies have come from and I love the scenes where Paula interviews the Mother Superior and realises that she has come up against an inscrutable force. The team dynamic is different now and with Paula at the forefront and Stacey champing against the bit, there’s a lot to enjoy in this police procedural. Her books have been translated into over 30 languages and have sold more than 11 million copiesall over the world.

A lesser known adaptation is A Place of Execution, a three-part Television drama that was broadcast on ITV in 2008. The drama won a TV Dagger Award in 2009. I have no problem with reading about committed, happy (or unhappy) couples. But I don’t believe that Tony and Carol have any chemistry left, and I think the series would be rejuvenated if they accepted their friendship. Perhaps then, the spark would return? Maybe? Maybe not? Either way, I’d love to see a return to the thrills and depravity of the earlier series, and less of Tony doodling Carol’s name in the margins of his notebook. There were no great surprises or plot twists in the story, more a long chain of conversations between officers in stations or on crime scenes. Some of the events were recapped by various characters which got a little long-winded at times and I wanted the story to move on. In her college, she was the first student coming from a state school in Scotland as she did her schooling from the Kirkcaldy High School. Because of her sincerity in the studies, she was made the President of the common room for the juniors. McDermid went on to complete her graduation and began working as a journalist.There are snippets of Tony’s thoughts, portrayed in a book he is writing. And while I enjoyed those parts at the start of each the chapters; I would have liked more of his brilliant mind intertwined with the cases at hand. Val believes that Hill and Jordan’s ability to recover from their demons is what makes them so compelling. Though Val says she never had the kind of close relationship with her mother that she’d have liked, her mother did understand the value of education and used to take tiny Val to the library and read her stories from picture books. So for me, finding that at the start of the book, Tony is in prison serving a four year jail sentence and Carol is no longer a cop, is a real shake up to the series. The cast are an eclectic assortment of people with different ethnicity, sexual orientation, levels of tolerance and not to mention a few mental health problems to boot. I loved the excerpts at the beginning of each chapter, which are taken from the book that main character and psychological profiler Tony Hill is writing. For the most part, I read each one twice over for deeper meaning, or full comprehension, as I said, I wanted to savor McDermid's writing. Here are excerpts from two of my favorites: The first book (THE MERMAIDS SINGING) I found was needlessly gory and excessively violent in some places so I’m glad to see that in the second book McDermid leaves more to the imagination instead of including gut-churning details of bodily defilement. This is, once again, a very gruesome read form Val McDermid but have to say that I couldn’t put the book down. This book was different. It’s not the thrilling ride of Tony trying to decipher the killer, or Carol putting her life on the line to catch said killer. I want to think of this book as a bridge between what this series was; and what it will now become. I see great potential for all characters involved, and if like me you fell in love with them you will most defiantly like this book. But if you read this series for the physiological profiling (like it started off) you will be disappointed. High points include Richard’s rendition of ‘The Lonely Goatherd’… Featuring Charlotte Coleman as Kate and Kathryn Hunt as Shelley/Alexis. But we only had an hour’s transmission time to work with, so I only adapted one half of the book, leaving the way open for… The Logan McRae” Series by Stuart McBride is another good one. Logan McRae is a detective sergeant that works to keep demented killers off the streets of Aberdeen, Scotland.
