The voltage regulator/ flasher relay can be located in different places depending on which moped you have. On the Gilera Stalker used for this blog it is located behind the front fairing panel (behind the headlight). On a Piaggio Zip it is located behind the left hand rear panel (on the side of the seat).

a) install resistors (extra solder joints, bulky, generate heat, waste power, weigh a little bit, look fugly) Cut into the relay case, very carefully, and don't go deep. From about 1.5cm to 2.5cm from the top of the relay on the printed side, roughly where you should see >PBT+GF30<. Do not cut deep as the circuit board is only 3-4mm away from the plastic casing. So you've finally decided to swap out those bulky OE indicators for some sleek new LED units; maybe because you want something brighter to keep you safe out on the road, or you want to make your bike look its age and not older. When it comes to upgrading your current indicators to an LED set, simply plugging in the new units isn't quite enough (although fitting them properly doesn’t require you to be a neuroscientist). As the difference in wattage between LED and standard indicators is generally quite large, it is recommended that you will need one resistors per indicator that you are changing. You can buy 25 watt resistors in pairs here.We need to extend this wire and fix a spade connector onto the end. Similarly we need to splice into one of the red/white wires and connect in another wire with another spade connector as in the picture below... Suitable for many other classic or modern 12v cars or applications with standard filament / incandescent bulbs or LEDs or a mix of filament / incandescent bulbs and LED. LED motorcycle indicators have a lot of benefits over the OE option, being smaller & lighter units, which allows the designs to be a lot more sharp and modern, plus giving a much brighter flash out on the road.

Getting the right LED relay for your motorcycle in most cases just means pulling out your existing relay and buying an LED specific relay that matches the pin lay-out of your current relay. In the pictures above we have soldered the new wires on and then covered them with heatshrink tubing but you can use any method you wish provided it makes a secure insulated connection. These electronic relays will keep your flash rate constant and keep it standard even if the load on the circuit changes. Standard relays will not flash at the correct rate with LED bulbs. LED lights work using a lower wattage than normal bulbs, which is why when you plug them directly in to your existing indicator wiring you'll notice they flash a lot faster than normal and most probably a lot faster than the rate allowed for a UK MOT * As with every modification to your motorcycle, if you are not confident undertaking the work it is always a better idea to take your motorcycle and the indicators to a qualified mechanic.

Quality European manufactured replacement 3 pin/connector indicator relay to fit all models. Like the original units it also has a hazard function for models with a switch fitted. If your Triumph has a 3 pin flasher relay, this should work with all types of indicators LED or original bulb type. Most Piaggio/ Gilera mopeds are fitted with an indicator relay which is built into the voltage regulator unit. LED lighting draws much less power (load) and lasts way longer than standard incandescent lighting. Replacement of indicator bulbs with LED’s will cause the indicators to flash too fast. This happens because your new LED lights draw such little power. Installing an LED flasher relay specifically designed for LED lights is the easiest method to solve this problem. What about load resistors? way they work out how fast to allow flashing is by the wattage of the system. When you fit LED indicators you adjust the wattage of the system and therefore need a new relay to suit (Or fit resistors). Resistors get hot during operation, so wrapping them in tape can lead to resistor over heating or worse melting plastic parts around it.

So, to slow your flashing down you have to make the wattage draw similar to how it was with the original indicators, and you can do this by fitting either a new indicator relay unit or with resistors. We have tested many LED relays on the market and we have found this one to be the best. Some LED relays will work perfectly with either rear LED lights or front LED lights but not both! No two Caterhams are the same and we have found that after extensive tests (with the help of our customers) that the our LED flasher relay will work every time at the correct flash speed. This relay has been specifically designed to handle any LED/standard bulb combination. Where other relays fail, this one does not. By adding resistors to the wiring you increase the wattage draw from the LED indicators to match what was there before, therefore your existing relay will continue to run as normal with a standard flash rate. Test your indicators for each resistor you fit to ensure that they are working correctly and to determine if any more are needed to further slow down the flash rate. This unit is also excellent with most LED indicators. Unlike the original incandescent bulbs, LED lamps are polarity sensitive so you may need to try swapping the connections to each indicator to get the indicators to work okay.This relay and it replaces the standard relay when you upgrade to LED lights. It corrects the indicators flashing too fast without the need to use a load resistors. This relay has been tested on Caterham’s with the Just Add Lightness LED lights. Why do I need this? The reason for this is that conventional flasher relays work by detecting how much current is being drawn by the indicator bulbs. Because LED bulbs draw far less current than conventional bulbs this confuses the flasher relay which may then flash at the wrong speed or not at all. Suitable replacement for 3 pin flasher relays with 49 (X), 49a (L) and P Connectors. You will need to also connect the earth connection wire. Also available with Positive Earth, please select the required option from the drop down menu. One of the problems with this is you have to get the resistor value just right. If you fit just rear LED lights and get them flashing correctly you may need to change the resistors for different value ones if you then late additionally upgrade the front indicators.
