We are studying the novel Parvana by Deborah Ellis for the Year 8 English Change unit of work and I also read the sequel Parvana’s Journey. The fifth book in Ellis's Breadwinner series, One More Mountain was published by Groundwood books in 2022, takes up Parvana's story as the Americans are leaving Afghanistan and the Taliban are regaining control in Kabul. I would definitely recommend these books to any person who enjoys reading books based on real life events.

He ends up in the coca "pits" where the coca leaves are made into coca paste, and the story follows his adventures from there. The title of the book refers to the role of the protagonist, 11-year-old Parvana, who is forced by circumstances to be the breadwinner for her family in a war-torn Taliban-era in Afghanistan.

Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who lives in Kabul, Afghanistan with her mother Fatana, her father Nurullah, her bossy older sister Nooria, her cheerful younger sister Maryam and her baby brother Ali.The stories are set against backdrops as diverse as the remote north of Canada to Moscow's Red Square to an opium farm in Afghanistan. Parvana and her mother go to the local jail and beg for her father to be freed, but the guards beat them for being so outspoken. These books provided me with a greater understanding of what both women and men must go through in Afghanistan, living in fear of the Taliban. In 2006, she wrote the best-seller, I Am a Taxi, which tells the story of a Bolivian boy named Diego whose family was accused of smuggling coca paste, which is used to produce cocaine.
