Communication is the key to making things run smoothly on set. These are commonly known as boom operators, with the mic often just referred to as a boom mic. The pole (you guessed it!) is referred to as a boom pole. Whilst there are some big benefits of using a shotgun mic (depending on the recording scenario) there are some downsides to consider.
