But when the Vichy government went out of their way to pass anti-semitic laws and turn a blind eye to factories being manned with the slave labor of political prisoners and POWs, more recruits to Resistance activity were made. In the San Francisco Chronicle Carl Rollyson described the book as a "compassionate account of Ethel's character as a wife and mother" and an "engrossing narrative". Why did these women decide to risk their lives in situations where many people would be tempted to stay out of trouble? She gathered that her star ageny, Vera Leigh, woke up and fought hard at the last and severely scratched the guard killing her.That’s a good thing, because it’s very impacting to get this plethora of stories from different women in various walks of life (although a little bit skewed towards the wealthier or more privileged side, in my opinion). The book takes an unflinching and sympathetic look at the roles women were asked to play in the war, and those they wrote for themselves. Girls who may have had a romantic entanglement with a German soldier had their heads shaved and were made to parade naked around town. I loved seeing the lengths to which Parisian women went to preserve their sense of dignity and to out-chic everyone else - especially the female German soldiers and ancillaries in their comparatively drab uniforms.

The majority of books I'm personally familiar with focus on one particular aspect of wartime France, such as the resistance, victims of the Nazis such as the Jews and other political/religious groups, or the "regular" people just trying to survive. Sebba interviewed many of the surviving women, and tells their stories here, many for the first time.
