This focal length is optimal for nightscapes, and this lens's ultra-wide aperture is highly complementary for such use. Omitting the optical stabilization system reduces the size, weight, complexity, and cost, and the ultra-wide f/1.4 aperture feature aptly handles many low-light scenarios. As the aperture narrows, the entrance pupil size is reduced, and the mechanical vignetting absolves with the shapes becoming rounder. That means this Sigma seems a bit of a steal when compared to more recent releases form PanOly, which IMO are significantly overpriced.Removal is sometimes very challenging, and in some cases, flare effects can be quite destructive to image quality. With a minimum focus distance of 9.8" (250mm), this lens has a 0.10x maximum magnification spec, a very low number. It starts out with the 16mm f1.4’s sharpness, which is outstanding by the way. The photos come out just so crisp and with such nice depth. Center sharpness at f1.4 is excellent with the edges holding up quite well. As you stop it down, sharpness overall improves, especially the edges. The 16mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens simply captures every little detail. However, if you are after the absolute maximum sharpness from this lens, I would say shoot around f5.6. to f8. Still, don’t be afraid to use this lens throughout its aperture range because it will give you superb results at pretty much any setting. The optics are just so good. Indeed, there are no built-in electronics at all, so focusing is a purely manual affair and you’ll also need to shoot in Manual mode, adjusting the aperture via the lens’s control ring, rather than from the host camera.

Again, you need to pay extra for the lens hood, which is sold as an ‘optional extra’ but is definitely worth having for reducing ghosting and flare, as well as giving physical protection to the front element. Unlike many ultra-wide zooms, this one has an attachment thread (55mm) for the easy fitment of filters. Image quality is very pleasing, on a par with that of the EF-M 15-45mm and 55-200mm lenses, although the image stabilizer is slightly less effective, rated at 3-stops.
