Gone are the likes of recognisable names like Deathstroke and Red Hood, instead mostly replaced by a corruption storyline featuring the old mayor of Gotham. It's obviously a conscious choice, and while hewing closer to the source material will probably please most people, I found this volume less compelling than the first for this reason. I've seen Batman fight mobsters and such before, there's like 5 seasons of it - let's do something different for a change? This starts off with a very enjoyable Court of Owls/Deadman story drawn by one of my favourite artists Ty Templeton and the rest of the stories are fun as well though - perhaps - less memorable. Paul Dini is a co-writer and he always produces solid stories. Alan Burnett as well is a co-writer on many stories and does a fabulous job. I think the general idea behind these comics is "what if we had some of the more modern Batman characters in the animated series?" and it does a good job at that but it is still a little weird to see the darker villains (Court of Owls) invade the animated Universe.Ching, Albert (March 31, 2020). This has actually happened in a few of the comics I’ve reviewed up until now, including this series as well as the Harley Quinn: The Animated Series spinoff books. I understand that you want to push HBO Max Max as much as possible, and these TV spinoff comics maybe aren’t seen as so important that they can’t be used as a vehicle for that sort of thing, but it doesn’t paint the product in a positive light. Recommended if… Is this just a nostalgia grab aimed at almost-middle-aged dudes who grew up watching the series? Eh, probably. Does it feel good to jump down that rabbit hole remembering what it was like watching these adventures after school? Sure does. Overall, this was a joy to read. If you loved the animated series you get stories and art that perfectly capture the feel of that beloved series. You get a Lex Luthor/Superman guest shot. You get the Red Hood. You get Deathstroke trying to recruit Batman's helpers (Batgirl and Robin) and you get a sweet Christmas tale with Ivy, Harley and that Ventriloquist villain...Scarface (I think). what's not to love.

It has some original stories but the main story retells the Red Hood but with a more PG feel. It is a very different take on the tale but the basics are still there and that brought down my enjoyment a bit. It didn't have that wow factor because I knew the basic outcome of the story. This really does feel like a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series thanks in no small part to Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, who were both integral to the show. There are a few ongoing story-lines as well as a couple of stand-alones, so it works nicely.
