There's the usual Johnsonian play and experimentation -- the ledger sheets, for example, or the intrusive authorial presence making itself felt -- but Johnson goes about it with a minimum of fuss.

He’s the only British author with the guts to reassess the novel form, extend its scope and still work in a recognisable fictional tradition… The future of the novel depends on people like B.He devises his very own double-entry bookkeeping system, which he applies to his own life; “crediting” himself against society in an increasingly violent manner for perceived “debits” owed to him for being maltreated. The revenges become more and more elaborate and detailed, and then Johnson ends the book in the only possible way. In his most successful experiment, The Unfortunates­ , his unbound book-in-a-box, Johnson lets the reader configure the novel in whatever manner they wish. In a way, the novel becomes a piece of metafiction that enables the author, via his character, to rage against the machine.

It may have jumped a few places given how much I enjoyed this slim novel, his penultimate one from 1973…the year Johnson committed suicide. At the age of 40, increasingly depressed by his failure to succeed commercially, and beset by family problems, Johnson committed suicide. Born into a family without money, he realised early along in the game that the best way to come by money was to place himself next to it. He soon realises that this isn’t going to work and decides to become an accountant, taking up a position as an invoice clerk at Tapper’s, makers of sweets and cakes. June was the widow of Tony Tillinghast, Johnson's close friend from university, who died of cancer in 1964, at the age of twenty-nine.The ratio seems to work out roughly to several hundred corpses for every time his boss shouts at him. In the former, you roll dice to choose from a random selection of actions you have chosen: in the latter, the eponymous protagonist decides that for everything which impinges on his freedom and/or happiness in life, life owes him for it.
