Cassel is one of France’s biggest movie stars and has appeared in over 100 films, including Irreversible, Black Swan and Eastern Promises. Featuring an often stunning Dolby Vision transfer, Atmos audio in French, corrected subtitles, and a nice assortment of vintage extras, it’s the release we always deserved.

In native 4K, HDR even creates the impression that the dynamic range of the visuals is off, which should not be the case. And whenever there’s a drop in quality because of the original techniques used or the early CGI, it emboldens just how great the overall presentation looks. The pair don’t take their duties too seriously and enjoy a bit of banter whilst pointing out a few behind-the-scenes secrets.It packs action, mystery, and romance in a fantastic, truly original tale of friendship, courage, and survival. This is enhanced by more behind-the-scenes footage, including rehearsals of the action scenes, which are a pleasure to watch. If you had a blast with the previous John Wick outings, spending the best part of three hours watching him kick, stab, shoot and nun-chuck his way through another cast of increasingly grandstanding players will be a similarly fabulous ride.

Whilst the action effectively ramps up towards the end, the storytelling becomes convoluted and some character shifts are less convincing.Ultra HD Blu-ray has done wonders for this film offering an incredible 2160p Dolby Vision transfer from Studiocanal. He also talks of the problems faced during the shoot and waxes philosophical about his work and that of French and genre cinema in general. None of the cuts are perfect, but for many the Director's Cut is the preferred version, however the elusive Theatrical Cut is a great bonus to finally get in HD and may have been been the go-to version to watch for some had it also received a seamless 4K integration. Fronsac attempts to woo her, much to the dismay of her father and brother Jean-François (Vincent Cassel), the latter of whom is a famed hunter who seems bitter and twisted due to losing his arm. The film itself was originally shot on 35mm and scanned at 2K to finish the digital effects, which required this 4K restoration to be a complete overhaul, involving the original film reels being scanned at 4K and in 16-bit color.

Bonus features may be the same assortment of archival extras, but if you’ve never seen them then they’re new to you and well worth checking out - especially the feature-length The Making of Brotherhood of the Wolf.Studiocanal's 4-disc release of Brotherhood of the Wolf has just about everything fans could possibly want - including, notably, the elusive Theatrical Cut which, whilst not necessarily superior, is a version of the movie which many have wanted to revisit for quite some time, and earns its own Blu-ray Disc and thus, finally, 1080p presentation. There are close to 10 hours worth of extras, including both commentaries, which is exhausting to get through but, surprisingly, not so repetitive to feel like overkill. The first half keeps things simple and this works in its favour, because the film, in essence, is something best appreciated at surface value. At the time, the Blu-ray offered the very best presentation of the film on the home video market, but technology has evolved a lot during the last couple of decades. In 2001, StudioCanal released Brotherhood of the Wolf unto the world, a period genre-movie hybrid, based on actual accounts from 18th Century France.
