Thank you to the Warhammer Community team, I really appreciate the hook up and I hope my paint job did this incredible model justice. This multipart plastic kit allows you to build a Commemorative Series model capturing the Emperor's Champion, Bayard of the Black Templars, as he buries his Black Sword in the chest of an Ork Nob. The JoyToy Action Figure Warhammer 40K Black Templars Emperor’s Champion Bayard’s Revenge is an intricately designed and flexible collectible figurine inspired by the well-known Warhammer 40K franchise.

Although random chance is not the Lumineth way – they prefer nice, neat numbers and predictable outcomes – they’ll be left at the mercy of your opponent without a way to roll for combat. Everything other than the bare-head option clipped out pretty easily, but Rob likes the helmeted option more! And while I had the Skeleton Bone and Strong Tone out, I used the former to base coat the loincloth and the parchment on his back pack and the latter to shade them. Festooned with details, including a huge variety of different textures and materials, an option for a stylized helmet or bare head, plus a fully sculpted display base, this model represents the perfect opportunity to show off the painting skills you've devoloped over your years in the Warhammer hobby. He met his end in the latter, being killed by orks during the Templars' last, desperate stand at the Temple of the Emperor Ascendant.

Red Earth might be an opaque ink but it still takes a few layers to really build up a solid coat, I used this to add some variation to the base. But as the Emperor’s Champion fights in the thick of it, I imagined that these artefacts must have been repaired and modified over time. They did a pretty decent job of covering up their mold lines, but there will still be a few you have to take care of. To really hammer the point home, I mixed Mephiston Red with Yriel Yellow to make a nice bright orange and used that to edge highlight Powa Klaw. The weapon wielded by an Emperor’s Champion is the Black Sword, hence I painted the blade with Scale75 Black Metal which I then washed with Nuln Oil.However, yellow also works really well for green skin as mixing green with white just desaturates it making your Ork look lifeless. Something compelled me to prime the Emperor’s Champion in grey, I’m not quite sure what though, as a black prime would make more sense for both the metallics and, you know, all that black armour the Black Templars are famous for. This miniature is supplied unpainted and requires assembly – we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Colour paints. We talked to sculptor Maxime Corbeil – who also designed last year’s awesome Emperor’s Champion – on the model’s journey from concept to reality. Taken right from the story, this mini is a perfect re-creation of Emperor’s Champion Bayard in the midst of combat.

With that done I could then begin using lighter colours to really bring out the texture of the model. The miniature comes with two heads, both a helmeted and un-helmeted version, to fit your preference. We want to stay as close as possible to the original material, but there’s always something that needs to change in the translation from 2D to 3D, as we can’t use the same painting and composition techniques that make our favourite pieces so emblematic. The Templar symbols I first washed with Black Templar contrast paint to bring out the texture before highlighting it with Two Thin Coats Dungeon Stone like I did for the armour panels.I’ve heard people around my FLGS mention running this as their Emperor’s Champion in their lists, and I suppose you could do that, but I’m much more interested in just having it for display. To help tie things together, I used the same approach to highlight the leather, mixing the base colour Skrag Brown with Yriel Yellow and using it to add tiny scratches along the edge of the leather straps.

In a dramatic turn of events, the noble Black Templar watches his entire squad get annihilated by a merciless Warboss.The helmet is different from the previous iteration, but it’s reminiscent of Helbrecht’s or the crusader’s helm from the Black Templars upgrade kit.
