For the most part, his work is solid but doesn’t feel like it takes note of Miller’s Year One in any meaningful way. Most of Grayson’s character arc on this matter happened in the pages of New Teen Titans and was never really touched upon in the pages of Batman. That company went to DC, wanting to put together bags of BATMAN comics; the Toys ‘r’ Us people looked at about three or four years of BATMAN…and picked out my issues.

While the material overall is pretty strong, the selection of issues could have been better to get a better view of the Jason Todd/Robin "arc" prior to Batman: A Death in the Family. Two-Face's alternate personalities would later come into conflict with one another again in The New Batman Adventures episode " Judgment Day", in which he creates a third persona known as "The Judge", who unknowingly almost kills himself by trying to execute Two-Face. There are a couple of stories that have interesting themes, and another issue has Two-Face and Batman facing off in a baseball stadium that's full of painful, yet somehow entertaining, baseball lingo. Sadly, Issue 414 was interesting, but apparently isn't resolved until issue 421, 422, which aren't easily available.My over all thoughts: This is a great collection, full of complex and interesting stories that also give us some pretty in-depth, psychological looks at favorite characters--namely Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, and, of course, Jason Todd. This was one of my all-time favorites as a kid -- I read it and reread it often -- and I was relieved to discover how well it holds up. We all know what happens to Jason Todd and he's become a cool character in his own right, but what does he mean to Batman? Which leads me to my next point: I liked seeing Bruce Wayne as the business man he is, see him at work and talking with people as a billionaire rather than a vigilante.On the one hand we have Two-Face, still committing numbered crimes and flipping coins; on the other hand we have stories like Starlin's "Victims" which could have come straight out of O'Neil's dark-and-gritty Question series.

Speaking of which, in the first two issues, Jason is already living at Wayne Manor, and then in the third issue--five issues later in actual publication--we get him and Batman meeting. The next two chapters, "The Sound of Silence" and "The Ghost of Masahiko Tahara" are amusing-enough standalones that don't add much to the emotional through-line of the new Dynamic Duo, other than dramatizing their nascent partnership as an increasingly effective association. What is fun about the collection is seeing the character of Jason Todd get a re-written to after the DC line reboot.
