Glenfarclas describe their whisky as ‘Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky’ which might confuse some when they learn that the distillery is actually located in Ballindalloch in Speyside – traditionally the Highland region embraced what is now delineated as Speyside and, deep-down, Glenfarclas is still a very traditional distillery. These old time values still have some modern day benefit for whisky lovers - Glenfarclas bottings present unfussy low-key branding which eschew the current trend for marketing-driven label twaddle. When on the hunt for sherry cask matured whiskies, Glenfarclas should always be somewhere on your horizons. The majority of the distillery’s whisky is sherry matured (mainly from ex-oloroso and ex-fino sherries) from spirit which is produced via direct gas fired stills.

Taste Fruity and spicy/spirity, dried fruits, raisin, bramble, dried apple and mango, slightly leathery, plenty of cinnamon fizz, tannic oak and freshly grated nutmeg. With water more spice, oak and a hint of cardboard. Sip this one slowly, savoring it in your mouth, and studying the aroma. Each time, experiment with different water proportions and glassware. This is a worthy dram that will reward your patience and attention. On the nose: Candied nuts, lime juice, zucchini bread, roasted marshmallows, green grapes, whole cloves, and a gently smoky-woody note that tips into a green astringency. You think “Sherry Bomb” and concrete examples come to mind. Macallan releases, Abelour A’bunadh batch releases, Glengoyne tea pot dram and Glendronach 15 and 18 year old expressions. Some cask strength whiskies, some not. A mixture of different sherry cask maturations from Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, Fino… the list is quite varied. Uniquely, they do offer a broad range of flavours when maturing whisky.

105 Cask Strength - Glenfarclas

In the mouth: Comparatively young tasting, with the most overt wood influence of the trio. There’s a hint of turmeric before the middle of the palate is dominated again by the smoky caramelized sugar flavor of campfire marshmallows. This transitions to the finish, which lingers moderately with some spicy wood accents, but is the least pronounced of the three. Conclusion The key selling point of Glenfarclas 105 is in the name: it’s cask strength at 105 old British proof, or 60% ABV, every time. That means the casks for each batch have to be selected not only on taste, but also on ABV. It’s a curious conundrum for the blender. Imagine their dismay at creating the tastiest batch of 105 ever only to find it weighed in at 59.6% or 60.8%. A total disaster. Finish: Amazingly smooth for the strength, wonderful warming with a lingering spiciness, yet very rounded. I can safely say this 105 from Glenfarclas still sets and maintains a high standard. For a family-owned business like Glenfarclas it makes sense for them to do this right and keep doing it right. A great value-for-money, cask strength sherried, quality introductory dram from Glenfarclas. This is a complex and elegant whisky. Sweet dried fruit, vanilla cream, cinnamon, baking spices and a drying oak all dance together. The flavors and smells are rich and warm, owing to the high strength. Its flavor profile is best suited to a cold winter night. Being Jewish i cannot confirm whether it tastes like christmas but many people say it does. Finish: Medium in length (you might initially have thought it to be quite long, but without water, much of that would have been your taste buds shuddering at the cask strength) with a very nice level of astringency.
