A blue LED status light comes on when the EO Mini Pro 2 is ready to charge. Red means something is wrong, and green means your vehicle is charging.The LED lights also flash during installation. The charging rate of the EO Mini Pro 2 flows at 7.2kW, and is compatible with the domestic charging requirements of every electric vehicle on the market. The unit can be set to lower power output, though it cannot be done through the EO app and will require an EO-approved installer to adjust it.

Having looked at the EO Mini Pro, for a 16A charging station they advise a 20A rated supply and for a 32A charging station, a 40A supply. Your electrics may need upgrading, it all depends on how much power they draw. If the EO Mini Pro is installed with a Garo earthing device then no rod is needed, but if you don’t use a Garo, you should still use an earth rod. You can install the EO Mini Pro inside a garage for example and that way it would use the house earthing and not need a separate device. But this would mean you could only charge indoors and would have to put the electric vehicle in the garage every time, doing it outside with this setup is dangerous.The EO Mini Pro 2 is available tethered or untethered. Our review unit is untethered, and I prefer the clean, tidy installation it offers. The tethered unit costs around 25% more but is more convenient. EO recommends the cable be stored on a wool hook when not in use (sold separately). EO Smart Home app One service offering tariff integration is Intelligent Octopus, which delivers green electric vehicle charging through its next-generation platform. By providing six hours of cheap, green energy during off-peak hours (11.30 pm to 5.30 am) at a rate of 10p per kWh, users can charge their EVs more sustainably and affordably. The Intelligent Octopus app lets users set their charging preferences, so they are always in control of their energy usage.

The EO Mini Pro 2 doesn’t have a physical control panel. Everything is controlled via the EO Smart Home app, available on iPhone and Android. Charging schedule management is a crucial feature for users who want to maximise their solar energy usage and minimise costs associated with charging their electric vehicles. With charging schedule management features, users can set up customised charging schedules that prioritise solar energy in peak generation periods. For example, the Hypervolt Home 2.0 and Wallbox Pulsar Plus offer smart scheduling options that allow users to automate their charging, ensuring the highest possible use of solar energy.This then allows the charger to automatically read your solar panels power output and set the charging rate to match that of the solar panels. To ensure a constant charge your car will charge at a minimum rate, so if the solar energy output is not enough the charge will not constantly be turned off and on (which can cause damage to the car). The supply cable entry is created by drilling a 20mm or 25mm hole through the bottom of the enclosure. CT connections include an output for load management and one for output of solar array for solar charging. Comparable with other fast chargers on the market, the EO Mini Pro 2 offers a reasonably speedy charging time- especially considering its compact size. The single-phase connection simply means that the power flows through a single conductor instead of three. While a three-phase charger can work faster, they are not compatible with various AC suppliers, and installing an appropriate cable comes with a price. As the electric vehicle market grows and changes there are likely to be rapid changes in EV home chargers and electric vehicles in general. The EO system is a modular system so upgrades and changes are easy. You can easily add more EV charging points at home, to make sure you have enough charge points installed as your home charger needs change. It's easy to install - no need for earth rods (built-in PME, power install options available through the rear of the enclosure or at the base)

The main screen presents a synopsis of your settings and tells you whether your vehicle is charging. When your vehicle is connected, it displays the charge state, charging rate, energy supplied and the state of charge. The EO Mini Pro 2 has an LED indicator for faults. For example, two short red flashes mean there is no earth connection, and four short red flashes mean the Live and Neutral conductors are reversed. The LED indicators are useful for testing, although an electrician will use their own equipment to test the charger.Prior to the installation guy turning up, I took the cover off my fuse box but other than that wasn’t sure if I needed to do anything else. Pod Point’s latest smart charger, the Solo 3, has a decent app and is available as a tethered or untethered unit. It’s also available as a 22kW 3-phase charger – ideal for car parks. It lets you schedule charging and monitor sessions. The Ohme chargers – ePod and Home Pro – have more smart features and the Home Pro has the advantage of an in-built display.
