Not only is this rope great for training your pup to act from their memories, but its also perfect for teaching your pup to focus on you as well as giving them the freedom to run without getting out of your sight or control. The Flat Nylon Lunge Line can also be used as a pulling rope for walks, games, beach trips or even when youre just working in the yard.

This is a very versatile option, with both a front loop for dogs prone to pulling and a rear loop for normal runs and walks. The extra padded chest area makes it a great option for dogs who really pull very hard and could potentially hurt themselves – dogs really don’t understand their own strength, especially when they get taken over by the heat of the moment (which happens a lot with some dogs!) A: Yes! The leash is made of a non-absorbent material so it won’t get heavy when submerged in water and will even float when submerged. You need to take all these motivations seriously, but it’s important to understand which one is driving your dog. For example, if your dog is frustrated, lessons in emotional self-control come in handy. If your dog is fearful, building self-confidence is key. However, regardless of the reason for the lunging, some of the basic management tools and treatments are the same. Manage Your Dog’s Behavior Don’t be fooled into thinking you can manage this with one hand, it’s incredibly hard to do, and I can tell you that from first hand experience. I tend to keep one with the bulk of the leash, and the other to control the length. And that’s your intro to long lines! This last option is one for those with smaller dogs to get excited about – not that it doesn’t also fit bigger dogs as well! If your dog finds normal harnesses too big, or too uncomfortable (either due to sensitive skin or past injuries,) the Soft Harness by Puppia should help massively in remedying those problems. It isn’t suitable for big dogs who pull, and isn’t super adjustable, but for the price, you really do get a lot.Rather than just pulling the end of the long line when you need to stop your dog you can grip and release the long line using the hand closest to the dog which will slow them down gently to a stop. Whilst if you’re going hiking in wooded areas, you may want to rethink this, this type of leash is super versatile, from large breeds to smaller dogs. They can give your dog freedom. Freedom to get it wrong – or right – without actually putting anything at added risk. Which is huge. I will often use it to help my pet owners prevent an undesired behaviour from happening (and undoing training efforts), and set their dog up to succeed by using this simple tool.

A: No other accessories are included but you can find other leashes from the MayPaw store if needed! The long-line needs to stay on the dog until you are almost never touching it and it’s redundant. It needs to feel, to the dog, as if it’s part of the dog’s anatomy – taken for granted and ignored. While a dog’s enthusiasm can be wonderful, they’re sadly not very aware of the effects of their inquisitive nature. A strong dog who constantly wants to explore can pull at the lead for hours – this can make dog walks, which have the potential to be one of the best aspects of owning a dog, into an absolute nightmare, both for you and the dog! Manage Your Dog’s Behavior

One I use for general sniff about and decompression walks (particularly with my hounds!) – this one is about 15 foot and much lighter and easy to handle. The other one I use for recall training with clients that’s 60ft, and very heavy. The take home message is that long lines are for TRAINING not for passively allowing your dog to race through the bush tangling up every dog they meet along the way. Tangled dogs and leash tension start fights. Be safe out there. Whichever behavior you choose, make sure your dog loves to do it. Start training in a quiet environment without distractions and pile on the treats. This will show your dog how easy it is to get rewarded for the new task. Next, build distractions into your training. Then add the trigger at a below-threshold distance. When your dog looks at the trigger, ask for the replacement behavior. Shower them with treats when they obey. Finally, ask for the new behavior while slowly moving closer and closer to the trigger. If your dog reverts to lunging, you’ve moved too far, too fast. Eventually, rather than lunging, your dog will see the trigger as a cue to do the new behavior and earn a reward. What is the best length of long-line? This depends on what you plan on using the long-line for (more on that, below!).
