I don’t know how LJ Ross does it, but The Shrine is another exceptional read in the DCI Ryan series. To get to book 16 and still maintain the same level of quality throughout the entire series is proof of an outstanding writer. I love all of the characters, Ryan, Anna, Denise, Phillips and the rest of the supporting members of Ryan's team. By now, they are like old friends.I listened to the audiobook (Whispersync) version of this book and enjoyed it very much. The narrator has a pleasant voice - but as I have mentioned before, all of the characters sound pretty much alike. Some are softer and breathier, but they all seem to have the same accents. We have a Scot, an Irish, and a Londoner, but they all seem to have the same accent - if not all of the time, most of the time. The prequel story to the DCI Ryan series, The Infirmary, is released only on Audible, in a very different way than the previous novels. There is a whole cast of characters playing each role, including Tom Bateman, Hermione Norris, and Kevin Whately. When an army exercise in Otterburn ends with the death of a civilian, DCI Ryan and DS Phillips investigate alongside the army. While they are investigating, Mac and Samantha carry on with their holiday.

Cragside House and its spectacular grounds were once home to a true visionary. Lord William Armstrong was a Victorian inventor and amongst many other things pioneer of hydroelectricity. His wife Margaret had a passion for gardening, and you can certainly see how her vision transformed the landscape around the house. It’s a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year but do try and get to see the wonderful display of colour from the famous rhododendrons in early summer. nyone who knows me knows that I adore LJ Ross's DCI Ryan series. It is one of my favourite detective series and I've really grown to love the characters. The premise is good - a killer using geocaching to taunt the police and leave body parts - but the execution is dull and full of cliches. Nonetheless, it is the vintage crime authors such as Agatha Christie and Daphne du Maurier, which have had the most influence on her work with her DCI Ryan Mysteries. After practicing law for nearly ten years in London, the stressful environment and the long hours began to take their toll. LJ Ross (Louise Ross) was born in a village in Northumberland called Ponteland where she also grew up. She attended Darras Hall primary school, then Dame Allan’s School in Farnham, and then and Central Newcastle High School. Once she graduated from high school, LJ Ross moved to London to study law at King’s College, where she got a master’s degree in law.

Apart from the editing, which her husband proudly did, she did not have to pay anything, and was pleasantly surprised when the novel took off. She has been publishing as an Indie ever since. The DCI Ryan Mysteries are set in Northumberland, which is a region of England that the author is particularly familiar with, given that she grew up there. These are fast-paced mystery and murder novels peppered with a bit of romance and humor. Walk from Bowlees Visitor Centre and cross the Wynch Brdige across the River Tees and walk the Pennine Way path towards High Force to see it from above. Head across the Millennium Bridge to the Baltic Art Gallery. Take the lift up to the viewing gallery and take in the view of the market and spot the famous sights of Newcastle. The sixth in the hugely enjoyable DI Ben Kitto series, set on the Scilly Isles. Someone from Ben Kitto's past is about to resurface, and being on an island, miles out to sea might not be enough to keep him safe. Meanwhile on the island, old bones are literally dug up, and turn into a cold case from decades earlier. After uncovering a fresh wave of corruption within the ranks of Northumbria CID, Detective Chief Inspector Ryan was looking forward to an uneventful summer. But, when a young woman is shot dead on the remote army ranges of the Northumberland National Park, Ryan is called in to investigate.

One of the other things I truly enjoy are the settings and historical connections with Northumberland. The author describes all the locations so well that you can "see" them in your mind's eye. I really feel I will want to take a trip to this area in NE England. He’s barely scratched the surface when reports flood in of a terror explosion at Durham Cathedral. Chaos descends on the sleepy, historic city and, when the smoke clears, they find a priceless artefact that once belonged to Saint Cuthbert is missing.There are also several elements that are clearly going to continue in future books - however none of these appear to have been translated into English. I'm assuming that this one didn't sell well enough to merit it. While we see who the murderer is, we don’t see the mastermind in the wind-up of this story. I assume the next book will see more of his/her machinations and then, maybe his final punishment. So, it isn’t exactly a cliffhanger, but we don’t get a total wrap-up of the story either. This was an absolutely astounding debut. The writing was sublime, the characters so vivid and the beautiful Northumbrian coast described with such a passion that only a true Northerner can conjure. The best way to handle both cases is to divide and conquer, so the team divides up and each part takes a different case. Their leads lead them all over the place – from terrorists, to fraud, to vendettas, to – well, you name it and there is some of it in the story. Penshaw Monument which has been owned by the National Trust since 1939 and is a Grade 1 listed structure. The Monument can be seen for miles around and the views it offers are absolutely breath-taking. Sunderland AFC have the monument upon their crest and it is such a recognisable symbol of the North East. We’re moving inland now and very much keeping that sense of history as we head along Hadrian’s Wall to encounter a world famous tree. Sycamore Gap is situated in a dramatic basin that frames it perfectly and is probably one of the most photographed and painted trees in all the world. Many remember it’s appearance in the 1991 film, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, where it’s location in the film is rather off the actual mark.Moving through time we now find ourselves at a much more contemporary landmark. Completed in 1998 and celebrating it’s 25 th birthday this year, the Angel of the North has become one of the most iconic symbols of the region. The work of sculptor Anthony Gormley it stands 66ft tall and a wingspan of 177ft. For ourselves and so many it’s the sign that after a trip away from the North East that you have come home. Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set amidst the spectacular landscape of County Durham. A colleague is shot dead on her doorstep at almost the same time as the incident at Durham cathedral. Are the two crimes connected? If so, how?
