Some of the film’s lovelier assets include the work of cinematographer Bartosz Nalazek. He captures the luscious greenery of the English countryside, the ever-grey skies, the drab homes and muddy streets of the town. Even in the midst of chaos, there’s a sense of calm in the naturalistic scenery. Claire M. Singer’s score keeps the music flowing alongside the buzz of bees. A memorable evocation of an era when homosexuality was a crime and abortion illegal. One senses a committed and thoughtful writer intent on using her gifts. Failing To Find The Light You still can’t go rewriting history, though, so any period queer film needs to avoid being a total bummer while still being true to what was possible in its era. That balance proves particularly hard for Tell It to the Bees, a romance set in very queer-unfriendly 1950s Scotland. However, while I applaud the adaptation of my novel, and I was moved by the final kiss (two beautiful women together, proud and public, while people tut and stare), I am not in love with the ending. The writing was gorgeous and I really liked how the author told this story. We get three pov’s: Lydia, Jean, and Lydia’s son, Charlie. Those are our main characters and I came to really care for all three of them by the end.
