Because this is the second book by B.A. Paris that I could not put down. Sure, I had to battle a few nagging concerns while I read: Overall it's not a terrible book though. The storyline is entertaining and kept my interest throughout. Fans of this author's other books should really enjoy this latest offering. It’s Livia’s 40th birthday, and her husband Adam is throwing her the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding they never had. Everyone she loves will be there, except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But Livia is secretly glad Marnie won’t be there. I hear quite a bit about this book, so thought I'd give the free 5-Chapter sampler a go and have to say I never continued on.

What to Read Next

I have enjoyed most of this author’s previous work, but this one was a BIG miss for me! If I wasn’t buddy reading it with DeAnn, it would have been a DNF! At first I was upset with Grace for not getting out of there but things are not as easy as they seem. Grace is living a nightmare beyond comprehension. I have been wanting to read Behind Closed Doors for quite some time. When it was available on NetGalley I requested it right away but unfortunately was denied. I think that just made me want it more! I will say, however, that all in all, this was one of B.A. Paris' stronger novels, (my favorite still being her first, Behind Closed Doors).

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn't work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows. While I still struggled with some inconsistencies, partially predicted the reveal, and didn’t love the open ending, a few surprises along the way helped raise my rating to a 3.5. While this is a true 3.5 star book for me, Goodreads forces me to round one way or the other, so I will give this one the benefit of the doubt since I mostly enjoyed it.Normally, when a sub-genre becomes mega popular and tons of books flood the market trying to cash in on the trend, I burn out on it fast. But, I have always loved a good mind game, a dark, tense psychological thriller that keeps you on edge from start to finish. So, I am loving all these new novels of suspense, and I love the new talent bursting out into the forefront, which is long overdue. Amelie has been a survivor from day one. After losing her parents, she has made a life for herself in London with help from Carolyn Blakely a kind woman who took her in. Shortly after marrying billionaire, Jed Hawthorne, she is kidnapped and held in a dark room. Who has kidnapped her and why does she feel safter there in that dark room than with her husband? Pretty bad when you feel better being held captive.

Although this was not my favorite by B.A. Paris, I will happily read more of her books in the future. There's zero character development so I never once felt emotionally attached to anyone and couldn't care less what happened to all of them. The protagonist is Poor You, the antagonist is So Evil, everyone else is unmemorable and exist just to be plot devices.

It really pains me to have to write yet another (The Dilemma) less than raving review of one of Paris' books. I really enjoyed this author's debut, and enjoyed her follow-up, The Breakdown, even more so, but then something happened and her subsequent releases have left a lot to be desired. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review. Behind Closed Doors is sure to be a huge success, and has definitely made it into my Top Ten Books of 2015. Characters flit from place to place to serve the plot. Conversational exchanges happen that would NEVER happen in real life. Though the chapters are short and I was still able to blow through this in a few days, it was somewhat of a torturous experience. I kept wanting there to be emotional depth, surprising reveals, ANYTHING to make it make sense and make it seem like the plot was truly going somewhere interesting... but that never happened.

i am also really pleased with the ending. it does end rather abruptly, but everything is tied up, so i didnt mind it. it doesnt happen often that i am satisfied with a conclusion to a mystery/thriller, so i am marking this one as a win. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. Though, you’d like to get to know Grace better.
