After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. But I bought this one in late July of the year 2023 and received an amazingly good sounding set of records that aren't cut too loud but still using the space of one disc's side for two to three tunes, making them sound like a 12" 45. Bristol's original trip-hop pioneers had, on previous albums Blue Lines and Protection, fused turntable wizardry to the warmest of soul. We also run our own record label, we host a show on Solar radio and produce mixes of our favourite sounds on Mixcloud. Every record is shipped in original factory-applied shrink wrap and has never been touched by human hands.

By the release of 1998's Mezzanine , critics were suddenly of the understanding that Massive Attack were one of the most important bands in the world. Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". To celebrate the album’s twentieth anniversary, Mezzanine has been remastered by Tim Young at Metropolis who has worked with the band for over twenty years.

every part of this album is indispensable; absolute masterpiece, and the pinnacle of the trip-hop genre, imo.

I consider myself lucky as coloured plastic discs, particularly dark colours, can be troublesome (and the first reviewer here has experienced unacceptable playback issues, possibly as a result). Teardrop featuring Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins brings a new life and emotion to their trip-hop sound. Mezzanine" is a murky, dank, haunting, atmospheric, brooding (if Batman was a real person this would be on his playlist for sure!

While the resultant set, released in 1994, does quite hit the same dizzying heights, it remains a thoroughly great album.

Review: Two decades have passed since Massive Attack signaled a new stage in their career with the dark, paranoid and claustrophobic brilliance of "Mezzanine", their third studio album. Even at four sides, the IGD is still an issue and I think it would've been worth making it a three disc release for even better fidelity.

The friction, though, seems to have create some gems; "Inertia Creeps" is drenched in menace, and "Teardrop" features the ethereal vocals of Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins --both of these a benchmark not just for the band, but for the trip-hop genre.
