I started sketching out ideas for this book thinking there must be some way of making a ‘chase/catch’ type book. He was listed in Time magazine's 'DESIGN 100' for the work he has been doing for fair trade clothing company People Tree. Make your own puppets with designer Sam Wilde, musical instruments with composer Noah Mosely and learn the basics of puppetry with the show's director Ian Nicholson.

The characters are so warm and endearing, their antics so gentle and funny that children will take them to their hearts. Like me, many young readers will enjoy the story just for its amusement while others will see its life lessons about the impact of force versus gentleness. This simple tale of adventure and innocence is a delight to the senses, stunningly crafted in his signature style. Pleasingly spare and simple in design and storyline, and ending with a good joke, this is a perfectly executed picture book. Award -winning author-illustrator Chris Haughton is back with another simple, satisfying story whose visual humor plays out in boldly graphic, vibrantly color ful illustrations.He was listed in Time magazine's 'DESIGN 100' for the work he has been doing for Fair Trade clothing company People Tree. He loved the end where they switch from birds to squirrels and the littler guy seems resigned that they will repeat their same mistakes! Following the Rule of Threes the older trio creep stealthily upon the bird on the ground, in a tree, and out on a frozen pond, always failing to catch their prey. For the final artwork i was keen that that the bird seems somehow from another world, brightly coloured and abstracted and removed from the world of the characters, it focuses all our attention on the relatively tiny bird on the page, leads the reader through the pages of the book and gives a punch of colour at the end. In fact it made perfect sense to create a mainly silhouette image from paper cut and in fact the design of the birds also benefitted from it too.

Contrastingly, the nature around them have much cleaner outlines, in particular, the birds contrast enormously in their bright red and green colours. Created digitally in a folk-art style, with everything but the animals done in a captivating blue monochromatic palette, it told more of the story than the words on the pages.I would like to think all my books are told in a way that someone without language could understand but I think the story in this book could be the most visual of the three, it certainly has the least text. It’s impeccably designed – from Haughton’s stylised paper cut characters and distinctive blocky font, to the illustrated endpapers and careful composition of each scene – and a terrific sense of theatre and anticipation is created through clever pacing.
