Culminating in the heart-stopping World Cup Final in 2019, the book finally answers that question fans have so often asked… what is it about this game? However, as someone around the same age - I was born a few months after Felix, who grew up attempting to bowl lovely loopy stuff, watching (and falling in love with) the England cricket test team toiling away in the 90s, who also supports the same county side (Surrey), and also developed similar musical tastes from Oasis, through to the Strokes, Interpol etc, growing up and maturing, *and* then was at university during the rise of the Maccabees (still a live gig highlight) and that musical era, I felt often very closely twinned with the very relatable accounts of these shared experiences. Felix encapsulates what cricket means to so many, and despite it being a sport which can be baffling to a neutral and engrossing to those who know, his words show a love for the game. In a fact-finding field trip in the name of catharsis, White hunts down the main players in said memory and hears about their own personal experience and recollections.

It's Always Summer Somewhere' is Felix's funny, heart-breaking and endless engaging love letter to the game of cricket. Felix has a remarkable way with words that you get a sense of on Tailenders when he's left to talk cricket, but it really comes into its own here. The cricket links and the painful impact of supporting Englands cricket team is eminently relatable.

A great book which will appeal to fans of cricket or The Macabees but way beyond that it will resonate with people with any lifelong passion. Nothing is delved into with any real insight and the entire book paints a picture of a man frankly looking for excuses for being a bit of a bell-end to those around him, whether his romantic relationships or family. If you know cricket at all, or even better if you like cricket - fantastic, as it's the primary topic. It’s Always Summer Somewhere is his funny, heartbreaking and endlessly engaging love letter to the game.

I loved the way that the intertwining aspects of the book came together - the rise and the end of The Maccabees, England men’s cricket team winning the World Cup, and the more personal aspects of White’s life. As a fully fledged part of the Tailenders community, I should probably preface this review with the acknowledgment that I went into reading the book inclined to like it, however the extent to which I did is a credit to White and his writing. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The Maccabees, the band for whom he is renowned, released four studio albums and split at their commercial peak after 14 years together, off the back of a UK number one album and major festival headline shows. His passion for the game is at the fore on the BBC 's number one cricket podcast and 5Live show, Tailenders, which he co-presents with Greg James and Jimmy Anderson.
