As last year’s winners, Moses and Parfitt will be boat number one in the 2018 event. When I asked Tyler Moses what he was thinking about as he and Bill were preparing to defend their title he had a couple things on his mind. His thoughts are on bait, current, and the competition. There’s a pretty great idea for a book behind Monsters In Print: A Collection of Creatures Known Mostly from Newspapers (Independently published; 2019), and I’m glad someone compiled and published it. That someone was Adam Benedict of the Pine Barrens Institute. The truth in the matter is that a family camped in the bus while they finished building their home. The bus has now been towed away. President Gerald Ford signed an act that would protect large swaths of land, and turn that land into parks. Unfortunately for Helltown, this included them. Bessie, Lake Erie’s very own monster, was first spotted in 1793. Initially, she was said to be between 30-40 feet in length, but as time has gone on Bessie’s length has grown. Stories about wildmen of various types account for the next biggest category, with 23 articles, while eagles or giant birds accounted for eight articles and giant snakes for seven. There was an old Presbyterian church called ‘The Mother Of Sorrows” that was abandoned in the Helltown area. Stories of Satanists performing rituals and animal mutilations in the church was one of the most popular stories in the area. It’s said the churches architecture resembled upside-down crosses and other Satanic symbols. Here is the “upside down” cross that so many were convinced was satanic. Crybaby BridgeIn 1955, a man was traveling through Loveland, Ohio, when he saw three mysterious creatures. Of course, the story has many versions, so he either saw them near Branch Hill OR over/under a bridge on the Little Miami River. If you’re anything like myself, you have to admit a bit of skepticism about some of these creatures, but maybe that’s only how you feel until you see one for yourself. I don’t speak German, and Google Translate doesn’t align with this story but I couldn’t find a better explanation.
