Scenario 1: there are only error messages regarding NOx sensor, error messages 30E9 and/or 30EA are not present.

Like the OP, I have strong exhaust smell after acceleration. The rough starts were found to be due to the vacuum leaks and a failed MAF Sensor (hot film was burnt off/open). This made the car super rich because of fail-safe programming thinking there was too much air coming in. deleting the long-term trims/adaptations (offset values for Lambda and NOx data, etc.) of the sensor with ISTA D (procedure of encoding of new NOx sensor, described here).
