I have mixed feelings about this book. As is often the case with short stories, I enjoyed a few but others weren't to my taste. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone looking for a sweet, heartwarming Christmas collection. A few were actually creepy/scary and seemed to be more fitting for Halloween than Christmas.The recipe essay was fascinating and discusses how March 25th was always the legal New Year though we celebrate it on Jan 1st (oooooh, so thats why the end of the fiscal year is later). I enjoyed learning how Britain did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1752 and had been 11 days off from everyone else for awhile because of it. This is also a lovely reflection on Winterson’s childhood and Mrs. Winterson using a comb and paper to sound the trumpet for the apocalypse so the family could practice what to do. Its main character, Alice Nutter, is based on the real-life woman of the same name. My favorite fictional story is, "Mistletoe Bride"..my favorite personal story is the one told by the author about her childhood turkey named, "Ah-Ha!". This book is comforting, funny, and very reflective. A life lesson that I took away from this book is to always be true to yourself and never let others define who you are.
