Following the success of her breakout poem, “B”, Sarah Kay, in collaboration with illustrator Sophia Janowitz, released her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. That is what I was really puzzling over in this poem: how do I heal from something I did not actually witness?

Sarah Kay, a graduate of Brown University, was born in New York to a Japanese American mother and a Jewish American father. On the whole they have been good with a few outstanding poems but I haven't been left feeling a sense of loss at the end or a sense of longing to read more, much more.The poems themselves aren't very long, 3 pages at most and 3 lines at least, so this makes this book something you can definitely throw in your bag and read between subway stops or while waiting in line for your morning coffee. And I know we live in different worlds, and we're always really busy, but in my dreams you spin around me so fast, I always wake up dizzy. I believe that this latter point is a reason that spoken-word poetry has become popular amongst many people are who are not real poetry fans. No Matter the Wreckage invites readers to revel in both new and beloved works, showcasing Kay's remarkable ability to celebrate the essence of family, love, travel, history, and even peculiar romances between inanimate objects ("Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire") with eloquence and charm. Founded by Kay in 2004, Project VOICE encourages people to use spoken word poetry as a tool for personal and world understanding, and a medium for vital expression.

I have been following Sarah Kay since my first year in college (2012) when I first watched her in Ted. I thought on paper her poems might seem flat and lack that excitement and passion she had conveyed with ease on screen. In No Matter the Wreckage, Sarah manages to give us more of a glimpse into her thoughts and experiences, and each and every one, some sounding like simple and mundane actions which are given a breath of life you would never expect, and others such as Subway, a piece which brings you to the underground of New York and illustrates a perfectly a simple picture of what it feels like to take the subway while it is raining.She performs with confidence and charisma, which adds that extra bit of voice I found lacking in No Matter the Wreckage.

Sarah Kay is a spoken word poet, which means that her poetry is generally presented orally, as opposed to on paper. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her. Sarah Kay also had the guts to take its stage and hold her own against performers at least a decade her senior.She is unafraid to bring you into her world, and bares her soul for the world to see, and that it is alright to be imperfect. Even though Sarah Kay has established quite the fan base on Goodreads and on the web, I just could not connect with these poems on a deeper level - perhaps because poetry has never been my genre of choice. Another being Hand-Me-Downs, shows how we can inherit traits from our family, and it may not always necessarily be a beautiful thing. I've also recommended the book to my other friends that are into poetry, and even some that haven't read poetry before. For a future book there may be value in considering whether playing with grammar, spacing, font and sizing changes etc.

The great thing about Sarah Kay is that she not only manages to show you the sadness and rawness of reality, but also the joys in the little things.But I wrote the poem after a pattern had developed in my life that resulted in me having “near-misses” with great tragedies. I am proud of the conversation it is engaging with and grateful that I can share it with folks through this book. For some I imagine reading the poetry will not compare to watching her present, but I think that that is a limitation of the medium, more than a complaint about the book. On March 3, 2011, she performed at the TED conference in Long Beach, California as part of a series entitled "Beauty, Imagination, Enchantment.
