I thought that the author manged to create reasonably credible characters to carry her explorations of family relationships, loss, grief and the mourning process. This was helped by the fact that the story was told from multiple perspectives, a literary device which enabled past events to be revealed in a gradual and, occasionally, surprising way. Although there were moments when I started to feel that the characters were in danger of becoming stereotypical, on balance I think that the author just managed to avoid this pitfall! There were some enjoyable moments of humour, especially when Jayne had conversations with Tom, her late husband whose ashes were in an urn on a shelf above the television! However, although the cover of the book might suggest this is just a feel-good, light-hearted read, it is in fact a surprisingly thought-provoking and insightful story which explores some dark themes. The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). Set in Dublin in a set of houses called Primrose Square...with a set of neighbors with extremely interesting lives. There are excellent transport links with Chalk Farm Station (Northern Line) approximately 0.3 miles away and Swiss Cottage Station (Jubilee Line) approximately 1.1 miles away. There is plenty I would like to say about the specifics but I think this works better as a book you don't know too much about in advance. It will mean the writing is even more powerful especially in the case of Susan and Melissa's stories. Focusing on three house holds, we come to know the ladies more, we come to love their little quirks and the things that they do as well as learning to cope with their own little secrets, when they just want to try and pretend that everything is okay really.

Most of all, by the end of the book, you’re more than likely going to feel like you know Primrose Square as if you lived there yourself.

And then there's Jayne, the loving older lady who lives next door to Melissa and her family in number 19, a widow after her husbands death a few years before, we get a glimpse in to her life and through her, we met her son and his wife and twin daughters. This is a bang up to date book that uses modern phrases, many previously unknown to myself (being as I am a bit of an oldie) but I know now what they are and the meanings, so I have learnt a lot. As she transitions, Francesca struggles to come to terms with her true self, and her relationship with her family is thrown into turmoil. At a loss of where to turn, she moves in with her cantankerous neighbour Miss Hardcastle, who hasn't left her home for decades. There she befriends fellow lodger Emily Dunne - fresh out of rehab, finally off the drink and desperate to make amends. It was great for there to be cameos from the ‘cast’ we had met in the first book. We got to see Jayne again, who is such a heart-warming character! Violet is full of sharp comments and retorts and is known as mad and a lunatic she doesn't want to get close to anybody but slowly starts to realise she needs company and that if she continues the way she has been going she will slowly fade away in her house. She is sour, bad tempered, uptight and not someone you would wish to sit down with and have a nice cup of tea and a chat. Surely there had to be a very valid reason for the way Violet was acting? She couldn't have been like that all her life. There is always a reason behind the actions, views and opinions of people and when the truth emerges re Violet. It's bitter-sweet and heartbreaking and again another storyline written to perfection.Emily was a character who was opinionated, unruly and at times very rude. It was like she couldn't leave her wild days behind her that the essence of that person still has residues left inside her. She needed to exorcise them before she could seek the forgiveness of those who had been affected most by her actions. But slowly I started to warm to her and again it's because of the way Claudia wrote her character. She really does show the warts and all of everyone and I love that everything is not all sweetness and light. That the characters are struggling for various reasons because life is not a bed of roses for everyone in reality so why should it be the same for people in books. The story had a very powerful opening as Susan Hayes stands in the pouring rain outside a teenage boys house. She does this most nights and as she says herself she is 'just an ordinary woman dealing with the unimaginable the only way she knew how'. She has become fixated on this one house because of the person it contains. The guards have been called several times but she just keeps returning. Clearly Susan is not functioning properly and is being eaten up by something she cannot forget. I thought it was brilliant the way we were drip fed the reasons explaining why Susan was in the state we find her in. I could guess parts of it but not until the exact cause was revealed did everything make perfect sense. Susan must have been a challenging character to write about simply because the author had to get the exact tone of her situation and state of mind right. I think Claudia did this very very well. I felt every bit of Susan's anger and hatred and understood why she directed it in the manner she did this but I did question was it fully justified or was it just a coping mechanism? Had she all the answers or was she simply looking to lay the blame at someone else's feet? Susan is consumed by grief at the loss of her older daughter and she wants answers and if you could call it revenge then that too.
