Over the next nine days, with our coverage of the Coronation and then Eurovision, we will be delivering the biggest week of live programming since 2012. — Kate Phillips, BBC Director of Unscripted The King was Crowned in the Coronation Chair (St Edward’s Chair) and The Queen was crowned in Her Majesty’s Chair of Estate. The Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, who was present during the consecration of the Chrism oil earlier this year, received the Ampulla containing the oil at the High Altar, which was blessed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Their Majesties removed their Robes of State, and The King sat in the Coronation Chair, on the Cosmati pavement. The Anointing Screen, newly made for the Service and inspired by the window of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, was brought into position around the Chair by Guardsmen of the Household Division. The Anointing, the most solemn and sacred part of the Service, took place as the choir sang Handel’s ‘Zadok the priest’, which was composed for the Coronation of King George II in 1727 and has become synonymous with such occasions. The Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Dean of Westminster and the Archbishop of York, anointed The King’s hands, chest and head. Afterwards, The King approached the High Altar and knelt, and the Archbishop of Canterbury prayed.

Every Monarch since has presented their Company with their own Royal Standard just once in their reign, with the exception of King George II’s King's Company Colour which, in 1709, was shot to pieces at the Battle of Malplaquet, so had to be replaced the following year. During the Recognition, the monarch is presented to the people in attendance. The only part of the coronation ceremony that is required by law is the Coronation Oath. The exact wording of the oath has varied over the centuries. After the oath, Charles will be anointed with holy oil from Jerusalem by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who will pour the oil onto a spoon and anoint Charles' hands, head and breast. Frontline emergency personnel who have been in paid service, retained or in a voluntary capacity, dealing with emergencies as part of their conditions of service, and completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023;

London's Westminster Abbey has played host to royal coronations for the past 900 years. Westminster Abbey has been Britain's coronation church since 1066 and has witnessed 38 coronation ceremonies for reigning monarchs. The first documented coronation at Westminster was that of William the Conqueror on 25th December 1066. The golden St Edward’s Staff, with its steel spike, was created by the Crown Jeweller, Robert Vyner, in 1661. It derives from an earlier staff which was often referred to as the ‘Long Sceptre’ and carried in fifteenth and sixteenth century Coronation processions as a relic of the royal saint, Edward the Confessor. The colourful Coronation flowers will "reflect the real characters" of the King and Queen Consort. Inside Westminster Abbey, there will be 30 varieties of tulip, crab apples, azaleas, rhododendrons, and branches of trees planted by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. The Robe of State worn by The Queen was originally made for Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The Robe is made of crimson velvet and was conserved with adjustments made by robemakers at Ede and Ravenscroft ahead of the Coronation.
