Pesticides The RHS recommends that you don't use pesticides.Most pesticides (including organic types) reduce biodiversity, including natural enemies, impact soil health and have wider adverse environmental effects. Ready to use spray. No dilution necessary. Treats approx. 30sq m. Grazers is NOT a pesticide and is therefore safe to pets, wildlife, and the environment. Lilies prefer to be planted in a location with at least half a day’s full sunshine, if it’s a bit too shady they will lean their stems towards the sun. Wow, they sound very tall. Lilies can get taller over the years once they become more mature. I would advise giving the soil a freshen up each year and try using a good multipurpose compost like John Innes No 3 which is recommended for most lilies. You can also try using a Tomato Feed on your lilies to stimulate and strengthen them. Start using it when you see signs of growth. Make up your tomato feed with half the recommended dilution (written on the instructions on the bottle) and feed once every 3 weeks.

Lilies like a cold dormant phase throughout the winter so they don't need lifting. However, do ensure they have adequate drainage and do not get waterlogged as this will cause the bulbs to rot. Pesticide treatments are likely to kill natural enemies and so reduce the likelihood of natural control and can lead to resurgence of the target animal. The Lily Beetle is about 8 – 10 mm long and are easy to spot as they are bright red. The adults spend the winter in sheltered places in the garden (not necessarily near lilies) before emerging in late March – May to feed on the lilies. They lay their eggs underneath the leaves throughout the summer and these eggs take about a week to hatch into beetle larvae, which then feed on lily foliage leaving holes in the flowers and leaves. The larvae are 6-8mm long, but they can be hard to spot as they will disguise themselves as bird droppings by covering themselves in excrement. They pupate in the ground and then 2 -3 weeks later they emerge as adult lily beetles. The bright red adult lily beetles feed on the flowers, leaves and stems of the lily before laying more eggs. How to use: Spray directly on to the foliage. L. Campbell I bought several Isabella lillies 2 years ago and planted them in pots in the compost suggested. The first year they were a little taller than the 100cm mentioned. I left them in the pots and last year they grew to about 130-150cm and the flowers weren’t as impressive. Please can you advise what I can do to get the best show this year. Thank you.
