There are plenty of delicious-looking photographs of the intended result, though being picky I might have liked a few smaller images of the food being prepped, but that's hardly standard if my 3 existing cookbooks are anything to go by! Every recipe was a delight, and for the first time in forever, I’ve found a cookbook where I will eat almost every dish. There are explanations of what the recipe names mean in English as well as interesting trivia about the food. I also saw she has a Genshin Impact range and now I am hoping that maybe in the future, there will be a video game recipe book too! Ault serves up Japanese cuisine that she either discovered or saw depicted in anime in this dutiful collection.

I loved the inclusion of quotes from the shows, and I very much appreciated that each recipe gave not only a list of ingredients but was also clear on the equipment you would need to use. The author has been doing anime food recreations for a while, and these recipes are drawn directly from that.I definitely appreciate Estero’s focus on creating visually cute or stunning food with innovative flavours. Inspired by Studio Ghibli and classics like Naruto, Clannad, Fairytale, and more, Nadine Estero is teaching you how to make every anime dish, from simple spaghetti to braised pork, for cooks of all levels to enjoy. The recipes are generally for only one or two servings so you don’t have to convince your whole family to eat something new. However, many of the recipes are time and labour-intensive and have many steps and many ingredients. I took my time with this one, trying out a few recipes and reading the backstory of the recipes and connections to anime both popular and obscure.

The only nitpick I will make is that it would have helped me personally to see a list of equipment needed to cook some of the dishes - that way I could prep the relevant bowls, utensils and other items before I start reading through and having to fish out what I need to make the recipe on the fly, but I'm hopeless at any recipe I haven't learned in the last 45 years! I really liked how there’s a list of Asian ingredients listed at the beginning of the book which explains what everything is. The instructions were written very clearly and I liked that it broke down the prep and cooking time in each recipe.

Though it's not totally anime-centric, it's definitely a great selection for anyone who loves a little geekery here and there.This book is not only entertaining but also a valuable resource for those venturing into Japanese cuisine at home.
